Borno To Prosecute Parents Who Fail To Send Children To School by Askubur(m): 9:45pm On Nov 07, 2016 |
Borno State Government on Monday said it would prosecute parents who fail to enroll their children and wards in schools. “Any parent either out of ignorance or willingly refuses to send his child to school will be made to face the full wrath of the law,” Alhaji Kaka-Shehu Lawan, the Bono State Attorney General/Commissioner of Justice said. He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri that government was already offering parents several incentives to encourage them to send their children to schools. The commissioner noted that it was lamentable that some parents still refused to send their children to school in spite of the incentives. “The government has directed the Borno State Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to mobilise all children of school age to be enrolled in schools. “It has also invested heavily in constructing new schools and renovating those vandalised by Boko Haram terrorists in the course of the insurgency, so as to provide conducive atmosphere for learning”. Lawan said that government had also introduced free school bus services and other incentives to attract children back to schools. “Government has procured 150 luxury buses to provide free ride to school children in Maiduguri and communities liberated from the terrorists by the military. “It has also introduced the provision of free meals, school uniform and books in schools as part of the incentives to retain students in schools. “The governor is also looking at the possibilities of introducing cash incentives to parents to ensure retention of children in schools,” the commissioner added.www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/borno-to-prosecute-parents-who-fail-to-send-children-to-school/170491.html#7VDsIFE9oOD8RdRJ.99 1 Like |

This is a good move by the Borno state government. But before the government begins to throw errant parents into jail, it must ensure that they are adequately sensitized to the benefits of education. 3 Likes |

govt provided incentives? I think kaduna state govt tried this. These mumu children went to school, ate the free food, pretended to go wash their hands and disappeared. People in other regions are begging for such an opportunity. The worst part is that after suffering through school, it is these semi illiterates that will dominate all the country's top positions by nepotism. They will keep dragging us back to the stone ages while the rest of us are forced to follow. Just imagine the president and vice. one is a Prof while the other is something else. smh. 8 Likes |

Good call by the state as it will help the IDEOLOGICAL fight against Boko Haram terrorists and Islamic radicals. However the big question is whether they can ENFORCE the "law". More importantly are the state and LGAs prepared to build enough primary and secondary schools with teachers and equipment to attract and keep the children in schools? 1 Like |

This folks have a lot to handle... People pay money to go to school and ensure they get educated by any means possible... While here people are paid to go school and they still ensure they don't get educated by any means possible... I still keep saying this, the problem of Nigeria and Most african countries isn't really corruption but misinformation, lack of orientation, lack of right knowledge, corruption and and other forms of crime are only products of these problems... 1 Like |

North East is the most backward zone of Nigeria when it comes to Education and I swear to God the Government are not doing anything to improve that. Even those who want to go to school willingly (higher institutions) the Government don't want us to because they have increased the school fees now only the rich can afford going to universities 1 Like |
