State-ordered Demolitions Leave 30,000 People Homeless In Lagos by SkytrendNews: 2:51pm On Nov 11, 2016
Some 30,000 residents of the Nigerian megacity Lagos have become homeless because of state-ordered demolitions and fighting between rival communities, residents and a rights group said on Thursday.

The violence highlights the challenges of a rapidly rising population unable to provide enough jobs and housing for its 180 million people. Many end up trying to migrate to Europe by boat from lawless Libya.

Africa’s largest economy is in recession as oil revenues have fallen and hard currency reserves dwindled, forcing the closure of plants unable to import raw materials. Every day, thousands head to Lagos, the commercial capital, seeking work in a city of 23 million.

A spokeswoman for Lagos police said officers had arrested several people for setting fire to makeshift houses in the affluent Lekki island district. She denied claims by a Lagos-based rights group, the Justice and Empowerment Initiatives (JEI), that the police had destroyed buildings.

Most of these people have a roof on top of their head and even landlords and we're able to eat three square meals in their villages before they came to Lagos . I really don't understand its not compulsory to live in Lagos.

Na wao, l wonder why successive government both military & civilians have not been able to address the basic needs of the populace which is food, shelter and security and yet billions are budgeted yearly by both incoming and out-going government, no wonder Trump says Africa should be re-colonized again (especially Nigeria), seeing pictures like this make me agree with Donald Trump, what a shame to all the criminals we have in government from 1960 till date, nonsense, and yet one fat pig is having 15million US dollars and another 175 million dollars traced to her and yet we see so many people supporting the same wicked leaders that has kept them impoverished , what an irony angry angry angry

The keyword is compensation, not that the demolition is in itself wrong. Land belongs to the government, and in most cases these people are just squatting on the land without proper purchase. Which is one reason why government may at times find it hard to compensate.

The state ought to have a plan of housing this people b4 rendering them homeless. Rendering people home at this recession period is nothing to smile about. The govt must do something about this fast.
