So can religion
Religiously motivated MASS suicides

Montanism (8th Century) Edit
Main article: Montanism
In the 700s, the Montanists were told by Emperor Leo III to leave Montanism and join orthodox Christianity. They refused, locked themselves in their places of worship, and set them on fire.

Peoples Temple (1978) Edit
Main article: Jonestown
On November 18, 1978, 918 Americans died in Peoples Temple–related incidents, including 909 members of the Temple, led by Jim Jones, in Jonestown, Guyana.[13] The dead included 276 children. A tape of the Temple's final meeting in a Jonestown pavilion contains repeated discussions of the group committing "revolutionary suicide", including reference to people taking the poison and the vats to be used.[14]

On that tape, Jones tells Temple members that Russia, with whom the Temple had been negotiating a potential exodus for months, would not take them after the Temple had murdered Member of Congress Leo Ryan, NBC reporter Don Harris and three others at a nearby airstrip.[14] When members apparently cried, Jones counseled "Stop this hysterics. This is not the way for people who are Socialists or Communists to die. No way for us to die. We must die with some dignity."[14] At the end of the tape, Jones concludes: "We didn't commit suicide, we committed an act of revolutionary suicide protesting the conditions of an inhumane world."[14]

The people in Jonestown died of an apparent cyanide poisoning, except for Jones (injury consistent with self-inflicted gunshot wound) and his personal nurse.[15] The Temple had spoken of committing "revolutionary suicide" in prior instances, and members had previously drunk what Jones told them was poison at least once before, but the "Flavor Aid" drink they ingested contained no poison.[16] Concurrently, four other members died in the Temple's headquarters in Georgetown. Four months later, Michael Prokes, one of the initial survivors, also committed suicide.[17]

Solar Temple (1994–97) Edit
From 1994 to 1997, the Order of the Solar Temple's members began a series of mass suicides, which led to roughly 74 deaths. Farewell letters were left by members, stating that they believed their deaths would be an escape from the "hypocrisies and oppression of this world." Added to this they felt they were "moving on to Sirius." Records seized by the Quebec police showed that some members had personally donated over $1 million to the group's leader, Joseph Di Mambro.

There was also another attempted mass suicide of the remaining members, which was thwarted in the late 1990s. All the suicide/murders and attempts occurred around the dates of the equinoxes and solstices, which likely held some relation to the beliefs of the group.[18][19][20][21][22]

Heaven's Gate (1997) Edit
On March 27, 1997, 39 followers of Heaven's Gate died in a mass suicide in Rancho Santa Fe, California, which borders San Diego to the north. These people believed, according to the teachings of their group, that through their suicides they were "exiting their human vessels" so that their souls could go on a journey aboard a spaceship they believed to be following comet Hale–Bopp.[23] Some male members of the group underwent voluntary castration in preparation for the genderless life they believed awaited them after the suicide.[24]

On March 30, 1997, Thomas Nichols, younger brother[25] of actress Nichelle Nichols, was discovered dead in his California trailer, with a note nearby that read in part "I'm going to the spaceship with Hale–Bopp to be with those who have gone before me." Using propane gas to end his life, Nichols, like the members of Heaven's Gate, had his head covered by a plastic bag and his upper torso covered with a purple shroud. Nichols' connection with the group is unknown.

In May 1997, two Heaven's Gate members who had not been present for the mass suicide attempted suicide, one succeeding, the other becoming comatose for two days and then recovering.[26] In February 1998, the survivor, Chuck Humphrey, committed suicide.[27]

Adam House Edit
In 2007, in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, a family of 9, all members of a novel "Adam's cult" committed mass suicide by hurling themselves onto a train.[28][29] Although the Daily Mail initially reported that they were victimized for converting to Christianity,[30] diaries recovered from the victims' home, "Adam House" related they wanted a pure life as lived by Adam and Eve, freeing themselves from bondage to any religion and refused contact with any outsiders.[29] After leaving Islam, they did not partake in Christian ceremonies and even worshiped Kali.[29]

Disputed religiously motivated suicides Edit
Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God (2000) Edit
On March 17, 2000, 778 members of the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God died in Uganda.[31] The theory that all of the members died in a mass suicide was changed to mass murder when decomposing bodies were discovered in pits with signs of strangulation while others had stab wounds.[32] The group had diverged from the Roman Catholic Church in order to emphasize apocalypticism and alleged Marian apparitions.[33] The group had been called an inward-looking movement that wore matching uniforms and restricted their speech to avoid saying anything dishonest or sinful.[34][35] On the suicide itself locals said they held a party at which 70 crates of soft drinks and three bulls were consumed.[36] This version of events has been criticized, most notably by Irving Hexham,[37] and a Ugandan source states that even today "no one can really explain the whys, hows, whats, where, when, etcetera."[38]

Training centre for release of the Atma-energy Edit
This sect was originally a splinter group of the Brahma Kumaris[39] and is known for a police and media scare in which an alleged attempt to commit ritual suicide took place in Teide National Park in Tenerife in 1998. The group believed in the end of the world but according to the religious studies scholar Georg Schmid[40] and the sociologist Massimo Introvigne had no intention of collective suicide

A recent scientific study has shown that athiests are prone to commuting suicide. The Network times quoted regarding athiesm and suicide

Dr. Martin "It was a remarkable fact that where athiesm prevailed most, suicide was more prevalent" In recent times, In Paris, after the publication of Paine's Age of reason, suicide rate increased

Pitzer college sociologist compiled country by country survey, polling and census numbers relating to athiesm, agnotism, disbelief in God and people who say that they are not religious. The following was among the findings:

"concerning suicide rates this is the one indicator of social health in which religious nations fare better than secular nations"

According to 2003 WHO report on international male suicide rates, of the top ten nations with the highest suicide rates all but one (Sri Lanka) are strongly irreligious nations with high levels of athiesm, read more

Existential nihilism accepts the notion that the world is without meaning or purpose. But the individual tends to give his own meaning to life .
Its like saying 'hey man I know life has no meaning or purpose but I'm gona just live and try to do something with my life' .

Wrong! The problem is that you are Ignorant and i already put it up in my post don't allow ur ignorance keep you from understanding it..

Life has no meaning or purpose do you even know what that means? But lemme breaks it down for you. It means that Unlike most theistic religion that believe that God has given them a predestined purpose in life what do you Christian call it Divine plan? Nihilism is base on the fact that there is no predistined purpose in Your life... now you and only you Have the Right to Give a Purpose to Ya life...

But the existential nihilist sees everything , even his own efforts as illusions and if these are abandoned , life is revealed as nothing . Also , the existential nihilist can show extreme pessimism . Plus if an existential nihilist is overwhelmed by life's vicissitudes , he is likely not going to cope with it emotionally of course this can lead to depression , anger , bitterness and in most cases suicide .

This is A lie! But it's OK as far as you are lying for Jesus no Qualms...

If i have the power to give purpose to my life i can decide to change my purpose at any time!

WhAT About Theist that don't have a Choice? They go ahead and end their life(suicide) maybe that's the purpose their God had set for them...

The foundation is still the fundamental principles of nihilism , there's nothing spectacular about it .Some believe existential nihilism is impossible .

Though I wonder, who is more prone to committing suicide..An atheist? or a theist?? (assuming the concepts on it's own can make someone do so)

The inherent meaninglessness of life is largely explored in the philosophical school of existentialism, where one can potentially create his or her own subjective "meaning" or "purpose". Of all types of nihilism, existential nihilism has received the most literary and philosophical attention

I hope Ur Ignorance doesn't Allow you not to understand....
I cant believe what I just witnessed from "eyehategod" after KingEbukasBlog baited him. "eyehategod" fell for the bait and hooked himself. now he is dangling, but he dont know it.

Yes, more proof that atheism is a mental illness.
read a brief extract released recently;
“There were 17,809 people in the study. It was a very large model as far as psychological experiments go.” This came as quite a shock to us as we studied patient after patient.

“Overt atheism, in other words, atheism that is professed as a way of life by some individuals — a manifesto of sorts — was found to be a common component inherent to many people suffering from other forms of severe mental illness,” said Dr. Hans Zimmermann MD PhD

“We started to notice that many of our experimental volunteers — those who were defiantly atheistic in their beliefs — were also suffering from various forms of dissociate disorders and social adaptation manias.

This came as quite a shock to us as we studied patient after patient because for years we have been led to believe that religious zeal was often a patently obvious sign of mental illness, but in fact this is not the case.

The site in question cant be biased if their findings are inline with other more shocking scientific findings on the INSANITY produced by atheism.

“Overt atheism, in other words, atheism that is professed as a way of life by some individuals — a manifesto of sorts — was found to be a common component inherent to many people suffering from other forms of severe mental illness,” said Dr. Hans Zimmermann MD PhD

Doctors at the University in Hamburg have been investigating the connection between atheists beliefs and overall mental health and the results of the study have unnerved even the most stoic scientists, physicians and researchers.

ISAAC NEWTON – An atheist and One of the greatest scientists of all time is also the hardest genius to diagnose, but historians agree he had a lot of psychological problems. Newton suffered from huge ups and downs in his moods, indicating bipolar disorder, combined with psychotic tendencies. His inability to connect with people could place him on the autism spectrum. He also had a tendency to write letters filled with mad delusions, which some medical historians feel strongly indicates schizophrenia. Whether he suffered from one or a combination of these serious illnesses

Charles Darwin – The master of faking evolution theories for personal status. He lived the greatest portion of his life in deep mental depression, there is a history of mental illness in his family. He believed his dad had the power of prediction; He had an endless catalogue of psychosomatic illnesses and lived as a semi invalid barely past thirty.

Sigmund Freud – During his insanity, He believed women wanted sex with their fathers and womens stories of rape and molestation were fantasies. Instead of victims these women were the villains.( shocking)

You might want to look up a lad named MITCHELL HEISMAN- who committed Suicide at HARVARD, after writing a voluminous treatise he appropriately titled "SUICIDE NOTE," in which he reportedly disproved the existence of God and the proved the futility of life, by shooting himself.

Harvard University quickly declared that he was not one of their students.
