Rome is one of the ancient cities of the world who were believed to have played a prominent role in civilisation. At one point in time, it was the strongest county in the whole world.

As great as they were, I came across some facts which made me think if they were as civilised as I was meant to believe.

Find below, five weird facts about Rome that you probably didn't know.

1. Goat dung was used to Make energy drink

According to a Roman author Pliny the elder, goat excreta gathered during the spring and dried was the best thing to use in an emergency.
Goat dung was one thing the Romans couldn't do without. Romans used to cover their wounds with goat dung with a belief that it is antiseptic in nature.

Charioteers used to flush goat dung down their throat as an energy drink. They would boil the dung in vinegar and gulp it down whenever they were out of energy. Some reliable sources claim that the Emperor of that time, Nero was extremely fond of this drink and made it to point to have it.

2. Blood of Gladiators was used as medicine

Educated Roman Physicians believed that epilepsy could be cured by gulping the blood of other humans, this led Romans to believe that gulping down gladiator's blood would cure epilepsy along with a host of other diseases.

3. Skin of Gladiators was used as Facial creams by Fashionistas

When a winning gladiator is killed, after using the blood as a medicine for epilepsy, women use the dead skin on their face to Make them beautiful. It was a common belief that using the gladiator's skin as facial cream made the women more attractive.

4. Urine was used as a mouthwash

They believed that clothes were best washed when they were soaked in a bucket filled with urine. This isn’t all, they also washed and cleaned their teeth with urine, a natural mouthwash for the Romans.

5. Phallus was a sign of Good luck

Phallus was considered as a sign of good luck in Rome back then; they also believed that wearing a pendent in the shape of this male organ would help you ward off evil. Reliable sources claim that anyone who wore a pendant of a penis would “prevent harm from coming”.
