He’s not wrong
Pep Guardiola has claimed FIFA should look into the possibility of changing the amount of substitutes allowed in a game.
The Manchester City boss stated that to avoid players ‘burning out’, football’s governing body should consider the use of ‘four, five or six subs’ allowed in a single game.
The Spaniard was talking after the proposed changes to the World Cup, and said that the players would be ‘killed’ with the amount of matches.
He claimed:“They are focusing on more and more and more – it affects the quality.
“I am thinking just for the players. They need to breathe, to [have a] break, to enjoy.
“It’s just three substitutions now – why can you not make four, five or six? All the players [would be] involved more than before, the coaches can use different tactics.”
Not just for the World Cup
That’s not the first time subs have been mentioned in the last few weeks, with German cup games now trialing the use of a fourth sub in games – and you’d be hard pressed to argue against the fact Guardiola does make a decent point.
During times like the festive period or Easter, with so many games, clubs who have bigger squads with players who get little time on the field may find the idea helpful.
Does it help the richer clubs?
One factor Pep fails to mention is that it could well help richer clubs with bigger squads and those with more money to spend on luxury players they just keep on the bench in case of using the fifth sub.
Smaller clubs who work with less money and fewer players may not be able to use that many subs in one game.
The former Barcelona manager did note that, saying:“For that reason (more subs) there have to be huge squads, more money for the clubs to spend.”
Giving youth a chance
One thing it could well do however is allow clubs to use their youth players – a side like Chelsea would then possibly be able to include their youth players in more match day squads and allow them to gain more experience.
However, when you look at the talent that doesn’t even make the side for clubs like Chelsea and Man City, that may not be the case after all.
