The holiday season is here again. It’s the time of the year when people are moving from one point to another to spend time with their loved ones. Since we can’t control the weather or traffic, we can make sure some safety measures are put in place to help us arrive at our destination safely. Some of these measures include:

Make sure your car is ok: take your car to the mechanic to check the level of the fluids or if they need changing, check the pressure in the tires and check your brakes. Some of these simple checks can be done on your own. All you need to know is to know where to check. We are often reminded to “check our car fluids often” but we don’t really understand what “often” means. We know every car is a little different but the link below shows INSTRUCTIONS that should apply pretty universally (http://www.usplaceofautos.com/blog/five-fluids-you-should-monitor-to-keep-your-car-healthy)
Make sure you have the complete vehicle documents: some of these documents include driver’s licence, vehicle insurance, vehicle registration etc.
Plan your trip: We all know it’s difficult to predict traffic so it’s always better to plan out route in advance. This would give you an estimate of how long you’ll spend on the road. Planning your journey ahead can also make you aware of alternative routes. Social Medias are also good source of information for travel news. You can follow handles that can give information about traffic on social media e.g. on Twitter you can follow @FRSCNigeria (The Federal Road Safety Commission) etc.
Leave early: this would prevent you from travelling when the road is too busy i.e. peak period especially during the festive when people are travelling to their home town or travelling for shopping.
Dress comfortably: put on something that suite the weather condition. It’s also OK to know what the weather condition of your destination is to enable you plan.
Know and keep emergency contacts: we don’t usually plan for emergencies but it always good to know who to call in time of emergency. This could include who to call in case of car break down, to report a crime etc. example FRSC contact number is 122 or 0700222553772. For residence of Lagos state, the number to call in time of distress is 767 or 112
Take care of you (the driver): make sure you have enough rest or sleep on the night before you take the trip. You don’t have to do all the long hour driving at a go. Know your limit and always stop to stretch your leg when the body demands it. Keep yourself hydrated. Travel with water
Be safe: keep your valuables out of sight. This would prevent thieves. Apart from valuables anything that can distract you is also worth putting away especially phones. It’s OK to put your phone in places (glove compartment or center console) that they are ready to use in event of an emergency. Also don’t increase the volume of your music player as this can also be a major distraction. Keep your seat belt on at all time when you are driving it is a very important safety measure.
We at US Place of Autos are saying obey traffic rules, don’t drink alcohol and drive and be considerate to other drivers life has no duplicate so drive carefully and safe at all time. Happy holidays!
