A syndicate which specialises in trading in newborn babies has been smashed in Borno State.

The Commissioner of Justice in the state, Kaka Lawan, on Thursday said the state was alerted to the existence of the baby factory when a woman, Kaltume Mohammed, that was newly delivered of a baby got home without her baby.

Lawan explained that when the state government investigated what could have happened, it discovered that the baby was sold to a “syndicate of baby traders.”

The commissioner said, “A lady was delivered of a baby, but did not return home with the baby. When investigation was conducted, it was discovered that the woman sold the baby. She was arrested by the Gwange Police Station in Maiduguri for selling her baby.”

He said the investigation also revealed that it was not only the baby of the woman that was bought as another baby delivered by one Aisha Bukar was found with the syndicate.

He said, “The two babies delivered by Kaltume Mohammed and Aisha Bukar were actually sold by one Zaria Haruna to Ngozi Nwokocha for N100,000 each.

“Nwokocha has been arraigned in court on five counts by the government.”

Lawan said Mohammed, Bukar and Haruna would soon appear in court.

The Attorney General said the state government would not tolerate a breach of the peace in the state.

He explained that certain people, who he did not mention, were bent on engaging in activities that would endanger “our collective safety and security.”

He said, “As a responsible government we shall not fold our arms and watch some people destroy our society, especially where such activities are clearly regulated or outright banned by our laws.

“We have a duty and we shall, with the support and cooperation of security agents and law abiding citizens, enforce all laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and those of Borno State for our collective and common good.”

He announced the ban of all illegal motor parks, sale of alcohol and operation of brothels, among others
