7 COMMON SGNS OF KIDNEY DISEASE YOU MUST NEVER IGNORE!

Deaths from kidney-related disease is at an all time high. According to WHO, 35 million of out of the 58 million deaths that occurred in 2005 were directly and indirectly caused by chronic diseases with kidney disease contributing a large share to the macabre list! Take a minute to ponder on it awhile. And why you are still busy contemplating the futility of life, here, another fact about kidney disease to knock the air off your lungs: kidney diseases kill almost as many peopple as does AIDS! Especially in developing countries where the lack of a robust healthcare delivery system impairs the management of kidney disease patients.

In Nigeria today, the spate of deaths due to kidney failure has never been so worrying as it is presently. From musicians to actors to students to both the yound and the old, no one is left out. Go through newspapers and you will be stunned as to the sheer number of people requesting financial donations for either dialysis or kidney transplantaion.

Anyways, just so that we are not caught unawares, here are 7 common signs/symptoms of kidney disease that must never be ignored:

#1.. Painful urination: also known medically as dysuria, this may be indicative of a urinary tract infection, and as such must be treated promptly and properly. This is because of the fact that the urinary tract infection, if left untreated or when not treated early, can spread to the kidneys (ascending infection) and damage them. Occasionally, the so-called dysuria is felt as a peppery or burning sensation. Regardless of the form it chooses to express itself, never ignore this sign/symptom.

#2. Blood in the urine (hematuria): this one is an alarm sign i.e it is a sign that should alarm anyone who witnesses it. Although, there are certain drugs that can cause your urine to appear bloody, still you must never take it lightly. At least first talk to your doctor and let him be the one to decide whether the urine is nothing to worry about.

3. Foamy urine: this is yet another sign of concern. When urinating, does your urine foam? If yes, then talk to a doctor asap. Usually, the foaminess is caused by the leakage of proteins from the body into the urine, a phenomenon called proteinuria, and it is a very important sign of kidney disease.

#3. Swollen legs or face: also known as pedal oedema (for the legs) and facial oedema or facial puffiness (for the face), this sign is one of the I-MUST-TELL-MY-DOCTOR-ABOUT-IT sign. The swelling is usually worse in the morning and improves as the day goes by. It also forms an indentation when pressed.
Now, suffice it to state, very quickly, that not all cases of leg swelling are a cause for alarm. For example, pregnant women do experience a mild to moderate swelling of the legs- this is normal is normal finding in pregnant woman. However, when the face gets involved, even though it is in pregnancy, report it to your doctor asap.

NB: leg swelling is also a sign of heart failure. That's why your doctor will ensure that your heart is also checked when you complain about this.

#4. Itchy skin (skin rashes): there are hundreds of causes of itchy skin. However, when your skin starts itching in the presence of the other signs or symptoms above, then be alarmed. Usually, the kidneys primarily excrete waste products. One of the wastes excreted is urea (from uric acid- a very toxic compound). But when the kidney is diseased, this function is impaired and urea accumulates in the blood (uraemia), thereby causing severe itching of the skin.

#5. Flank pain: flank pain, either left-sided or right-sided, often indicates kidney injury and as such must be taken very seriously. Occasionally, this the n can radiate to and be felt at the back.

#6. Nausea and vomiting: yes, it is not only malaria and typhoid fever that cause you to feel nauseous
or to vomit. In fact, when kidney disease is suspected, doctors often ask to know whether you have been experiencing this symptom. It is caused by the build up of waste products in the body due to the kidney's inability to perform its excretory function.

#7. Feelings of coldness all the time: this is coldness felt even when other people are complaining of heat. In the absence of some of the symptoms above, this may be be a symptom of hypothyroidism or something else. However, when it occurs with some of the signs or symptoms listed above, then kidney disease is likely. The coldness is often due to the severe anemia (shortage of blood) that characterizes kidney diseases. In pyelonephritis, the person may even complain of chills and fever.

NB: if you have any of the above signs or symptoms and you are not sure whether it is kidney disease or something else, please get a doctor's opinion as quick as you can.
