Lead batteries are safer , issue is quality dilution by sellers.

A 200ah battery used to last 18 to 24 months, now most of them are gone in 9 months or less.

Batteries for my ups give me 2 months at best then they pack up.

I spent a whole afternoon once trying to hunt down good quality batteries. No luck.

if you buy good batteries and the right tools and solar , you can stay up to 10 years and more before you need to change batteries. It’s very expensive yes, but it’s just same way people are making private boreholes to give themselves water cos of a failed government.

Make una buy Tubular battery na . It seems better than most "dry cell" deep cycle batteries . Its more expensive but worth it, if you get a good brand.

First of all, tubular batteries should NOT be used in enclosures as they emit gases.

Secondly, they are not maintenance free as you will have to topping them up with distilled water on a quarterly basis thereabout.

Finally, most tubular batteries have a difficult charging algorithm. You need a charging system that can constantly pump high voltages and current into your tubular batteries otherwise they will be undercharged. The solar thread is fraught with users who have had issues with this charging algorithm.

This is not to say that they are bad or not advisable (afterall my sister used hers for 3 years [without good care] before they packed up) but it is good for folks to know the pros and cons of batteries before they invest.

If you can't afford Lithium batteries (they are expensive now), and you want a maintenance free lead acid battery, I recommend Fullriver. Buy from their main distributor here in Naija. Their name is idyllic and their office is in Oregun.

Last time I checked (early this year), their 200ah sells for about 140k per unit. I use 2 units of 160ah variants and they are serving. Got them for about 125k per unit late last year.

Quanta Amaron and Ritar are good brands too, but ensure you buy from the main distributors themselves.

Batteries are the worst part

And now we are moving to lithium batteries which are DANGEROUS.

All these fake and recycled lead acid batteries are bad enough. Now people are selling lithium batteries that can go up in flames (thermal runway) and burn your house down sharp sharp.

Lithium "may" be dangerous, but it doesn't make lead batteries any less prone to explosion as well. It also doesn't suppress the fact that Lithium is the future of the battery function of renewable energy. Lithium is lighter, very amenable/flexible to different applications, can afford to be deep discharged safely (to as low as 80%, unlike lead acid where you are advised not to go below 50% so it doesn't die premature) and has much more cycles compared to lead acid batteries. Na just the money kill am. Once I see better bar now, na to upgrade to Lithium straight!...
