Just like any other profession, the teaching profession requires special skills especially in the area of effective communication and human resource management. These skills are very important and are always watched out for during an interview for most teaching positions.

To land a good teaching job nowadays is quite difficult and is even so for professional teachers. Lack of adequate preparation for a teaching interview can deny a qualified and even an experience candidate the job.



To have a successful interview for a teaching job requires thorough preparation. A good preparation may include revising hand few teachers’ interview questions which are commonly asked interview. This post however, takes a look at some sample questions that are usually asked by interviewers for a teaching job position. Always have it at the back of your mind that to make it through a teaching job interview successfully irrespective of what grade you have applied to teach requires a lot of hard work in terms of preparing for your interview test.

1. Tell us about yourself

This obviously from my experience always seems to be the number one on list of a commonly asked teacher interview questions that a candidate should expect to answer with less difficulty. In answering this type of question it is vital you begin by giving a brief insight into your academics and educational background, the subject area you have taught highlighting its relevance to your gained degree and the wealth of experience you have gathered over the years in the teaching profession.
What practical methods do you employ in teaching to required standards?

This teacher interview questions typically depends on the level of teaching standards set by your country’s ministry of education. In some countries there are disparity between the standards set by the public and private schools respectively. Whatever the case, it is always important to emphasis your commitment to upholding standards set by your country’s national or states ministries in charge of education to your interviewer. If asked to write a lesson plan, ensure you use the standard lesson plan format demanded by the state’s school board.


2. What experience do you have teaching kids (Grade 1 – 3)?

This is always a tricky teaching job interview questions that should be carefully answered. Considering the tender age of the children your interviewer requires you to have had previous experience working with younger children knowing that kids require extra care with special attention. Highlight the previous roles and the experiences you have gained working with children of this age range to your interviewer. If you do not have any, tell your interviewer you are very passionate about the well-being of children and that you are willing to put your passion into practice.


3. How will you contribute in ensuring that students preparing to take national and states standard examination are successful.

You should first of all familiarize yourself with all the names of the standard tests and exams available in your country. Give your interviewer several instances you have had the opportunity of coaching students for a names national or state standard exams. You can go further to impress your interviewer by narrating the several steps and methods you took in preparing the students and how successful there were.


4. What disciplinary measures would you employ in correcting students?

You may want to start by telling your interviewer that you always have clearly written set rules in place for your students on classroom etiquette and that any inappropriate behavior is franked at. You can also tell you interviewer that you prefer counselling your students while setting strict rules for them to obey the rules and regulation enacted by the school authorities. Do not mention in any teacher job interviewer that you flog, scold or scare students with wipe. Also do not tell your interview that you refer cases of discipline to the principal as you do not want to portray to the interviewer the inability to handle problem or conflict at your workplace.


5. How do you ensure that students with slower learning abilities measure up with your teachings?

Tell your interviewer that you balance up your teaching methodology by ensuring that you are neither too fast nor too slow and that you use the simplest learning tools and instructional materials in administering your teaching. You may also want to let your interviewer know that it is your responsibilities as the teacher to ensure that all your students fully understand the subject before you wind down your class by asking questions to ascertain their grasps of the topic.
