pls landers can you guys give reasons why no body or organisation in nigeria is trying to make good cartoons that will go into the international market. every family in nigeria seems to have the lion king cartoon in their home collection but how many ngerian cartoons do we have to sell to the world. pls you guys should give me clue cos i really dream big for the nigerian tv industry.

"Rear" = "rare"? If so, I agree with you. Please check out a movie called "Chika: the Rite of Perdition", if you don't know it already. I think the filmmaker has a lot of improvements to make in his animation techniques and storytelling, but it's a great effort and is definitely something I'd recommend if you're interested in Nigerian cartoons/animation.

Duh, nigeria sucks with stuffs like that, u even see when they want to do scary movies, it's wack! Nigeria can't be good in the cartoon aspect, so not possible.

Where are the artists that can produce animations? If we can get them, we'll start producing nimated movies.

there's no harm in trying,just let our producers do what they think is right,you saw what they for the wierd one herself and even 2faces (for instance) or lagbaja.we just need to give them more room for improvement

in my opinion we don't have cartoons in Nigeria for a two reasons
1) our producers have not realised their potential

2) there is no market for them

the prime target market for cartoons are children.somehow, i can't see themarket segment (that comprises buyers of nigerian home videos ) buying cartoons for their kids. maybe if the average nigerian kid had enough pocket money,

Which ever way you see things right now, i believe the future is bright.
Take a close look @ the music industry in Nigeria as it is right now, and you would agree with me that we aint seen anything yet.

pls they should not even try it o! when they started with home videos-a nollywood was born. What would become of a thriving cartoon industry (another cart-nollywood that would have the same star character in all the animations)

er, while am not a fan of nigerian movies, i wouldnt want to rule out d idea of nigerian cartoons, agreed nigeria has a long way to go, but den u can never tell,

Untill creativity becomes lucrative or at least attractive in Nigeria, we will continue to fill our lives and homes with materials and concepts created abroad. And nobody is going to give a damn. It's a global village!

But how can our nation encourage creativity?

Govt should:

1. Enforce intellectual property rights. i.e destroy destructive monsters like Alaba Video pirate market and Ikeja software pirate markets and all other such markets. And hunt down pirates like dangerous criminals.

2. Provide basic infrastructures e.g power (you can't produce computer animations with candles and lanterns!)

Creators should:

1. Overcome the "African mentality" that we are not as good in creative endeavours as the the other races. We have brains just like the others and we can create stuff.

2. Work hard at your creativity. Success at creating is 0.5% genius and 99.5% raw sweat and toils.

3. Create for the fun of it. Enjoy creating and do not set your mind on making money as the sole purpose of embarking on creative endeavours. Money will come when the world admires your creation enough to pay for it. At that point there isn't any limit to how much money you can make (I agree. A bit of marketing or much of it will help!).

The following creative areas are currently under-expoilted and are massive opportunities for talented people to hit fortune in this country:

1. Script writing (for plays, movies and TV productions)
2. Songs writing
3. Graphic animations (the subject of this thread)
4. Stand-up Comedy
5. Softwares and Web Services
6. Fashion
7. Advert
8. Fine Art
9. Food (Yes.You can create a food variety and make a fortune!)
10.etc (You can as well think of others. That's how it all begins, )

Wow, man! You just spoke my mind. I was pretty shocked and speechless when some people towed the 'we shouldn't even try' and 'we are not capable' line. Nice to know there are people like you around.

Before we can have fully animated cartoons, we need to start with comics. The skills are basically the same.

To start with comics, you must have to have a basic market/target for your comics. The question now is - how many Nigerians, or should i say the average Nigerian, appreciate or respect Fine Art not to even talk of comics, animations and the likes?

Like my uncle once said (he also draws just as i do ) - "Nigerians don't respect or appreciate fine art or the fine artist, they would rather seek to exploit the art or artist selfishly ".

the majority of nigerians dont have any dry wit. no humour whatsoever. maybe its poverty or austerity only God knows. and cartoon humor is harder to understand. you either get it or you dont.

they are rare because there is noboxy to fund it.Disney cant fund a nigerian cartoon because of the already tainted image of africa

Funding a comic is not hard, if we find artists who have the talent and are willing to work hard for little pay initially, and allow a professional writer to participate in their creative process. We have people who can fund comics. Most American and Japanese cartoons (animes) start out as comics (mangas) and then money flows in for animation.

I'm not even after the funding and skills as i believe they are sufficient enough, harnessing them seems like the hitch there. . .

What i'm mainly after is your target/market base and their receptiveness to anything Fine Art. If we talk about Music, hey the average Nigerian goes all the way for it. But Fine Art? They treat it like shit and at most, they fine artist is likened to those hustlers by the roadside painting pictures.

Trust me, the problem is never with your customer. Nigerian kids appreciate cartoons as much as kids all over the world. The problem is with (1) Product quality - making cartoons to appeal to Nigerians (2) Marketing strategy.

Since cartoons are primarily for children, they must be about topics that children can identify with. No blood, sex, drugs, realistic violence, or naked old women (hmmm grafikdon). Just friendship, youth, adventure, heroes!
