The sixth edition of the FIFA Club World Cup commences in Abu Dhabi on December 9. Competitors from around the globe will join hosts, Al-Ahli, in the United Arab Emirates for the showpiece tournament, designed to crown the best club side on the planet.

The major draw at this year's event are European Champions League holders, Barcelona. Pep Guardiola's side, treble winners last term, will be joined by Copa Libertadores winners, Estudiantes, Atlante of Mexico, African kings, TP Mazembe, Asian Champions League winners, Pohang Steelers and OFC representatives, Auckland City.

Games will be held at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium and the awesome Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, with the first game, between Ahli and Auckland taking place this Wednesday. It will be a play-off to see who has the right to face Atlante in the quarter-finals. TP Mazembe and Pohang Steelers join proceedings on December 12 in their quarter-final match-up before the heavyweights, Estudiantes and Barcelona, enter the draw at the semi final stage.

Atlante will face Barcelona in the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2009 after a 3-0 win over a brave yet outclassed Auckland City side. Daniel Arreola, Christian Bermudez and Lucas Silva scored the goals to send the Oceania champions into the play-off for fifth place, where they will meet TP Mazembe.

Pohang Steelers 1 - 2 Estudiantes La Plata

Eight-men beaten

Midfielder Leandro Benitez scored twice as Estudiantes of Argentina reached the Club World Cup final with a 2-1 win over eight-man Pohang Steelers of South Korea on Tuesday.

Steelers had three players sent-off, including goalkeeper Shin Hwa-yong, in the second half, with goalscorer Denilson taking over in goal.

Atlante-Barcelona preview

They speak the same language. They share the same goal. There is, however, a colossal gulf in reputation between Atlante and Barcelona heading into Wednesday’s second UAE 2009 semi-final.

The Cancun side failed to reach the Mexican Clausura play-offs, while the Catalan giants have won every competition they have been in this year. Auckland City will not lift the trophy on Saturday. Paul Posa’s part-timers have, nevertheless, revelled in a spectacular success story in Abu Dhabi.
