This is sincerely an absurdity of monumental proportion and a shame. Our government and regulatory agencies (if they still exist) should cover their faces in shame. I would like to ask: how much were you paid in bribe? Is this how far we are mentally bankrup? we are indeed in a big mess in this nation. Can you imagine imported garri from India now selling in shops in Nigeria and NAFDAC approve this?
Habaaaaaa Gari again? So we finally have consigned our dear country to a dumping ground for all forms of Asian mindless madness. Nigeria is the worlds largest producer of cassava for crying out loud but here we are shamelessly displaying Indian made garri not corn flakes on our shelves. Do we still have the Customs service, do we still have NAFDAC and other such regulatory agencies. This is indeed a shame, that must be condemned by all well meaning, patriotic and passionate Nigerians. We do hope that if need be these government agencies who look the other way when this poorly produced products are hauled into our nation should get set to meet Nigerians on the street in hot protest. We think that it should now be enough of this broad day light rape of our economy and our collective wealth as a nation.
In the same token, we call out on Nigerian to not just condemned this shameful act but to match such condemnation with a clear statement in action refusing to purchase such foreign made goods that Nigeria has better potential to produce. This call has become important because a great deal of Nigerians have a funny penchant for goods produced outside the shores of Nigeria even if these goods are substandard, and pose obvious threats to our health and well being. It is instructive to note that today the WHO ranks Nigeria so low on some key health indices, that our dear Nation lags behind almost all much smaller African nations.
Dear country men and women, here is a frantic and heartfelt call to redeem what is left of our national pride. Please may we all rise to condemn the importation of garri of all thing. Please let's rebroadcast this on all meddium of mass reach - ELECTRONIC and PRINT, until it arrives the corridors of decision making in this country

Alot is wrong with it.
Nigeria is the largest producer of cassava. How on earth should we be importing gari into our market? We are not encouraging our industry to grow at all. Umudike and IITA should have better technologies for the processing of cassava into gari than importing from India.

CURRENT UPDATE ON THE INDIA GARRI PUZZLE
http://www.darelasisi.co.uk/2017/02/nafdac-seized-indian-garri-for.html

We would one more time like to express profound gratitude to all organisations, groups and individuals that rose in outright condemnation of the bizarre Indian garri sale in Nigeria.

Our collective and concerted efforts got the attention of NAFDAC which has gone ahead to seize the product and have proceeded for some scientific analysis of the unlicensed product. This for sure is a victory for public opinion and a model worthy of both emulation and replication in almost every sector of our National lives. It is high time we realised the power of togetherness and indeed unified action especially against the flagrant abuses of our people and the demeaning of our nation and national pride.

Let's all realise that wether good or bad, this is our one and only country, in the actual sense of the word. Let's speak out loud against anything that potends even the least of treath to our collective heritage, and existence as a people.

We believe that the task of nation building is and must be a collective task that goes beyond the activities of the few people that hold the reins of governance.

Let's join hands together and build. Nigeria can, and in fact will be great again.

I guess you're either the importer of this garri or the officer that passed this through the border. Do Indians eat Garri?

People patronizing these goods that we have comparative advantage are part of our problems in this country.

This is sad!

The govt welcomes these nationalities with open hands and they get away with anything in this country.

The strangest thing about African countries is that you will find that import of such foods from any African country is illegal, while Indians, Chinese, Europeans et al can dump whatever foods they do not intend to eat on us with no restrictions. undecided

Our government and their agencies don't care about us. They rather please the foreigners. Then come the importers and consumers of such goods even when we have our.

These guys don't not force these items on us. Our govt and their representatives hardly read the details of any trade deal they sign. Most times, these deals are skewed in favor of the foreign countries.

@world1, pavore9, farmtech, can this thread grace the front page? Who knows? Someone close to relavant agencies may read and channel this injustice appropriately.

The deals we have signed with our "development partners!"

Sometimes it's our lawlessness and disregard for written things that protects us, because if we strictly implemented all our agreements and conventions and trade "deals" , God knows¡¡¡¡¡

I am certain this guy is either not thinking, lacks understanding or is the perpetrator of this evil. How on earth did Indian Ga air find it's way here. This must be resisted. This must be stopped, the importer and sympathisers should be shamed before they wipe out the rest of our essence.

The farmers make FX exporting the semi processed cassava than processing garri for local consumption. The government is not ready to encourage anyone. Besides how many companies are willing to start a processing plant where there is epileptic power supply, bad road network, double taxation from state and local government. By the time you factor all this cost to the garri, it will be very expensive. So imports are better alternative.

It seems you are not aware of current economic realities. It is cheaper for importers to bring in garri now. Do you know why? Most farmers prefer to export semi processed cassava to earn FX than process garri for local consumption. Secondly business are collapsing due to the unfavorable business environment. Example, the epileptic power supply plus high cost of diesel. By the time you factor this cost into the production, the garri will be expensive. So until this trend is reversed, we will continue to see imported garri not only from India but other countries such as China, Pakistan and even Ghana.

Trade deals or Trade agreement works when a country is operating optimally. We are currently been ravaged by hunger and extreme poverty!!!!. At the moment the government don't care about that.

The cost of production of most agricultural goods in some countries are cheaper compared to Nigeria....in Thailand, and Indonesia... Their budget for the agric sector is high compared to ours here.. There are even subsidized...so if you allow them they can sell at a cheap rate and still make profit..people will patronize them and before you know ii our local industries are dead.... THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING TO THE RICE INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA...

Many of our people cherish imported products so it might not be out of place for the expatriates to package in made in India bags. The whole scenario is worth investigating to ascertain the true story. The analysis will surely help our entrepreneurial decision making in that industry. Let's take it up seriously

Which one come be Indian Garri again na? Are we not supposed to rule the rest of the world when it comes to garri?
But why are people, I mean Nigerians, hellbent on destroying our own country and economy all in the name of 'importation?'
God, please save my country!

OP, I don't think Indian garri should not be imported.

I think you're missing the big picture. It seems like this might be an Indian delicacy ( it might taste different).

Since a lot of Indians live in Nigeria, it makes sense that there's a store that imports Indian food and sells it here.

Same thing that happens in places like Canada or even the U.S. using indomie as an example, there are local noodles but Nigerians might prefer to buy indomie.

It will become a problem, if your local market was selling imported garri from India instead of Nigerian garri, not a fancy store. I really doubt that imported Indian garri is sold at the local market. This is not something to shout about.

Imagine if oyinbo countries start banning specialty stores from selling egusi , pepper or crayfish. I'm not sure it will go over well.
