A fringe group of secessionists in San Francisco has started collecting the over 500 thousand signatures needed to put a secession question on the 2018 ballot, and a possible referendum in March 2019.
Though most of the promoters in the 'Yes California' group has been supporting secession for years, their quest has received new boost following the return of conservatives to federal power, their fears worsened by a chaotic and unpredictable Trump administration.

The arguments are outlined as follows:

1. Ideals.
California, being abundantly liberal, is simply opposed to many conservative ideals from free speech to abortion, from gender issues to marriage, even to religious and political views. Several of the new administration's hawkish policies on immigration, economy has set it at odds with the Golden state.

2. Population/Land mass.
With nearly 40 million extremely diverse residents, it is the largest state by population, and the second largest by landmass after Texas.

3. Education.
World's best universities Caltech, UC and Stanford are in the golden state.

4. Economy.
In fact, the most compelling argument.
With an economy the size of the world's sixth largest, California is the biggest contributor to US GDP, and easily trumps several European (not to mention African) countries in economic vibrance. Tier-1 global businesses Apple, Alphabet (which owns Google), Facebook, SpaceX, etc are headquatered in the State. Yes California and its supporters argue that the state spoonfeeds several other US states without getting much value in return.

5. Donald Trump.
If anything has caused the idea to be widespread, it is the Trump presidency and the fear of what it will become. Some of the largest postelection protests were in Los Angeles. Many residents carried placards stating 'not my president'. The state wasted no time in clashing with the new administration. San Francisco has sued the federal government over its so-called sanctuary cities where illegal immigrants are temporarily sheltered and protected from deportation. Trump has threatened to withdraw federal funds over disagreements on free speech. To mention a few.

The general argument is that the time is ripe for the state of California to secede from the US. Considering the staggering implications for the new wind of nationalism and breakaways blowing globally (including in Nigeria), do you agree?

California is actually big enough to be a country. In fact I read somewhere recently that only 5 countries in the whole world has bigger economies than California.

Shut up, you illiterate.
IPOB has quoted everything that matters. From the historical illegitimacy of Nigeria, to the unfeasibility and ensuing social entropy of Nigeria, to the humongous social and cultural divide and yet nothing has happened. The only thing we hear from illiterate like you is ''one naijeria'' regardless of suitability and strength of argument.
Afonja feeling funky. Bloody conehead.
