Who is who in the Accountancy Profession??

Chief. Akintola Williams
Doyen of Accounting

The history of the Accounting profession in Africa can never be complete without mentioning the name of the Doyen himself (Pa Akintola Williams ). Pa Akintola Williams is the first African to qualify as a Chartered Accountant. Also, he is the first president of the prestigious Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.
It is a privilege to share with you all the profile of Africa's Doyen of Accounting.

Background:
Chief Akintola Williams was born on 9th of August 1919.He began his education at Olowogbowo Methodist Primary School, Bankole street Apongbon, Lagos Island, Lagos state Nigeria in the early 1930s. Pa Akintola Williams also attended the CMS Grammar School, Lagos. He went on to Yaba Higher College on a UAC scholarship, obtaining a diploma in commerce. In 1944 he travelled to England where he studied at the University of London where he studied Banking and Finance, he graduated in 1946 with a Bachelor of Commerce. He continued his studies and qualified as a chartered accountant in England in 1949.
Career:
After returning to Nigeria in 1950 ,Pa Akintola Williams served with the Inland Revenue as an assessment officer until March 1952, when he left the civil service and founded Akintola Williams & Co in Lagos. The company was the first indigenous chartered accounting firm in Africa.
In October 1957, having grown steadily, Akintola Williams & Co. was able to admit its first partner: Charles Sankey. Since then the firm has grown from strength to strength, eventually becoming Nigeria's largest professional services firm following two mergers between April 1999 and May 2004. The firm today has more than 600 members of staff and operates under the name of Akintola Williams Deloitte.

Pa Akintola Williams played a leading role in establishing the Association of Accountants in Nigeria (AAN) in 1960 with the goal of training accountants. He was the first President of the association. He was founding member and first president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).He was also involved in establishing the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Pa Akintola Williams motivated and mentored many young Nigerians who followed in his footsteps and became qualified chartered accountants in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
He remained actively involved with these organisations into his old age.

In 1982 Pa Akintola Williams was honoured by the Nigerian Government with the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR). Following his retirement in 1983, Pa Akintola Williams threw himself into a project to establish a music centre and concert hall for the Music Society of Nigeria.In April 1997 Pa Akintola Williams was appointed as a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for services to the accountancy profession and for promotion of arts, culture and music through the Musical Society of Nigeria.The Akintola Williams Arboretum at the Nigerian Conservation Foundation headquarters in Lagos is named in his honour. On 8 May 2011 the Nigeria-Britain Association presented awards to John Kufuor, past President of Ghana, and to Akintola Williams, with awards for their contributions to democracy and development in Africa.

Who is who in the Accountancy Profession. Deacon Titus Soetan (ICAN PRESIDENT)

Naija Accountant welcome you to another edition of who is who in the Accounting profession. Today we would be taking a step further by bring to you all the ICAN 001, the current number one ICAN member in person of Deacon Titus Also Soetan. Deancon Titus Soetan attended Premier Grammar School, Abeokuta (1967 – 1971), where he obtained WASC (Division One). He also attended The Polytechnic Ibadan (1973 – 1975) and made a distinction in OND Accountancy. He was also at the City of Birmingham Polytechnic, U.K. (1976 – 1977) where he qualified as ACCA.
Career
The President of ICAN Deacon Titus Alao Soetan, is a Fellow of the Institute and the Senior Partner, Baker Tilly Nigeria (Chartered Accountants).
He commenced his professional career as Accounts Clerk at W.N Housing Corporation (1972 to 1973). He was the Accountant, Nigerian Television Authority (1978 – 1979). He was Audit Senior Manager at Z.O. Ososanya & Co (1979 – 1985) and became Partner, Z.O. Ososanya & Co (1985 – 1998). He was Partner and co-founder of Oyelami Soetan Adeleke & Co (1998 to 2005) and Senior Partner in the same firm (2005-2008) before moving to Baker Tilly. Soetan has been a Council member of ICAN since 2004 and has served on various committees and sub committees either as member or Chairman.

He is a versatile paper presenter and resource person at various levels of the Institute. He was member, Governing Council of Nigerian Accounting Standards Board (NASB); member, Budget Committee, Nigerian Baptist Convention (2000 - 2009); and Chairman, Nigerian Baptist Bookstore Limited (2001-2009).

Good day to you all. Today we would be celebrating an Accounting icon who has been steering the wheel of the Accountancy profession for over three (3) decades. I know you must have heard about the "Big 4" Accounting firm in the world. Guess what?? The icon we are celebrating today is the National Senior Partner of KPMG Nigeria.
Join me as I present to you Mr. Kunle Elebute

Kunle Elebute is the National Senior Partner (NSP), KPMG in Nigeria and Chairman, KPMG West Africa. He has over 34 years of professional experience advising clients in the private/public sectors in Nigeria, West and Sub-Sahara Africa. Prior to assuming the role of the NSP, Kunle served as Head of various sectors including the Financial Services Industry (FSI) and more recently Infrastructure, Government and Healthcare (IGH). Kunle qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1986 and has led various strategic and transformational projects for local & global clients. He was admitted as a Partner in 1996 and over the years led the Financial Services Audit Practice; Financial Advisory Services and was the Head of Advisory Services with responsibility for Deal Advisory, Management Consulting, Risk Consulting and Information Technology Advisory.

He was also the Project Director to the World Bank as part of a multi-disciplinary team of consultants responsible for the comprehensive evaluation of the Nigerian petroleum sector.Also, he was a Project Partner on the facilitation of a study tour of major operating and regulatory institutions on non-interest banking in Malaysia. The study tour was organised by KPMG Nigeria and Malaysia for the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Committee on Regulatory Framework for Non-interest Banking. The tour also incorporated capacity development for Central Bank officials on Islamic banking.
He was responsible for the privatisation and emerging markets practice in 1999. He led the Financial Advisory Services division which oversees corporate finance, transaction and forensic services for the West African sub-region from 2002 and became head of the Advisory Services Division in 2008.

He is a member of the KPMG Africa Board, as well as the KPMG Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMA) Board. He currently serves as an Executive Member of the KPMG Africa Global Infrastructure Group. Kunle serves on various not-for-profit Boards such as the Nigerian Economic Summit Group; Society for Family Health and American Business Council, amongst others.

Mr. Elebute serves as a director at Hygeia Nigeria Ltd; a member of the Governing Council of Grange School, Lagos; and a member of the Board of Directors of PSI. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (“ICAN”).

Mr. Elebute attended the Advanced Management Programme at the Lagos Business School in 1996. He holds a BA (Econ) from the University of Manchester, UK (1982). He is also an Accredited KPMG Global Valuation Specialist.

Mr. Ahmed Idris, a Nigerian from Kano State was born on the 25th November, 1960. He obtained his primary school leaving certificate in 1975 and West African School Certificate in 1980 from Dandago Primary School, Kano and Kano Community Commercial College respectively.
Mr. Idris attended the famous School of Basic Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, during the 1980/1981 academic session for his IJMB (‘A’ Level equivalent) Certificate, and got admitted into the degree programme of the Institution in 1981, from where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accountancy in 1984. He later obtained Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of International Affairs and Diplomacy Degrees from the Bayero University, Kano and the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1989 and 2006 respectively.

Mr. Idris has acquired working experience as an Accountant with the organized private sector (1985 – 1998) and the Federal Public Service (year 2000 till date). In the Public Service, he had worked as Assistant Director (Finance and Accounts) at the Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund (PTF), National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) and Ministry of Police Affairs, as Deputy Director (Finance and Accounts) at the Federal Ministry of Interior and Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), as Director (Finance and Accounts) at the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Ministry of Mines and Steel Development before his appointment as the Accountant-General of the Federation.

The AGF in the course of duty has attended many courses locally and abroad which have broadened his professional Horizon and enriched his competences.
Mr. Idris has membership of many professional bodies. These includes: Fellow, Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Associate Member, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, Associate Member, Certified Institute of Cost Management of Nigeria, Fellow Financial Analyst of Nigeria and Member, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
The official recognition of Leadership qualities in the AGF commenced in 1980 as the School Prefect in Kano Community Commercial College, Kano. Other Leadership positions held includes: Secretary Accounting Students Association, A.B.U. Zaria, Patron, National Association of Polytechnics Accountancy Students (NAPAS), Member, Accounting Organizing Committee on Commissioning of Houses built by Private Developers and Financed by the Federal Government Staff Housing Loads board.
