The emir of Kano, Mohammed Sanusi 11 has disclosed that he is working on a proposal to stop emirate men from marrying many wives if they do not have the means to support them.



The emir who spoke on Sunday in Abuja at the 50th anniversary of the death of former Nigerian ambassador to Ghana, Ambassador Isa Wali, disclosed that he had uncovered a clear link between polygamy, poverty and terrorism.

He revealed that he had set up a sub-committee of scholars in his Kano palace who have been working for over a year on the bill, and that he will present it to Kano State Government for passage into law as a way of immortalizing the late Ambassador Wali, who was one of the few early advocates of gender equality in the North.



“Those of us in the North have all seen the economic consequences of men who are not capable of maintaining one wife, marrying four. They end up producing 20 children, not educating them, leaving them on the streets, and they end up as thugs and terrorists.

“It is perhaps a tribute to Mallam Isa that today, as I speak, in the palace in Kano a sub-committee of scholars, which I set up and has been working for about a year, is finalising the final sections of a family law we intend to introduce in Kano which will address some of the issues that Mallam Isa was concerned about.

“The law will address what Islam says on marriage, it will outlaw forced marriages, it will make domestic violence illegal, it will put in conditions that you need to fulfill before you can marry a second wife, it will spell out the responsibilities of a father beyond producing a child.

“It is a big law which covers a whole range of issues from consent to marriage, to maintenance to divorce, to maintenance of children and inheritance. It will be the first time in northern Nigeria that a Muslim law on personal status will be codified.”
He said.

He however stressed that there was nothing wrong with polygamy as long as it was practiced properly, adding that at all moments women needed to be given the opportunity to thrive.

I thought democracy was a number game that required the northerners to marry as many as they could in order to maintain their numerical advantage over infidels. until they start thinking about quality (and not quantity) of life, they will remain backward.

I don't think you are a mistake as an emir. If only the number one emir (sultan)will think like wise, alot will be lifted out of the bondage of marriage and poverty.
