After 160 years of British dominance/ruling over the people of Nigeria,the country liberated herself in March 1960.The same year more than 69 blacks were killed by the white Apartheid in South Africa. As a result of Nigeria's successful liberation,the country formed new leaders with Tafawa Balewa as prime minister. Among his first duties was to send letter to ACN militants on 4th of April,1961, in response to the killing of scores, to make sure peace return to SA.
That's not all,in 1970,BALEWA also doled $5m to the ACN and Pan Africanist Congress (PAC),annually and became the first leader ever to provide direct financial support to SA.
Six years later,South Africa Relief Fund (SAFR) was formed by Nigeria in 1976 to provide relief,education and cater for welfare of the victims of apartheid in SA.
During military regime in 1977,Obasanjo,together with every member of his cabinet contributed total sum of $10.5m to help SA. Nigeria also created 'Mandela's tax' to further contribute to SAFR. These and more are some of the ways Nigeria contributed morally and financially and politically to liberate SA,and other countries of Africa. In other words,Nigeria helped liberate SA. As a result of support for SA,one would expect SA to be second home to many Nigerians but sadly,the people from the Africa most populous country residing in SA have always been the subject of xenophobic attacks-many Nigerians were maimed,killed and their properties were also destroyed. Recent of this unfriendly display of South Africans is the attack on Nigerians in Pretoria,a state in SA,where properties including workshops worth millions were set ablaze. It is on this note i challenge SA Government to rise up and protect Nigerians living in SA to avoid the repeat of this menace.
