Hypertension is an abnormal high blood pressure, a condition in which the force of the blood against the artery walls is too high. Hypertension is defined as blood pressure above 140/90, and is considered severe if the pressure is above 180/120.

High blood pressure, or hypertension has been called the “silent killer”, because it often has no warning signs or symptoms, and many people do not even know they have it. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. If untreated, it can cause health conditions, such as heart disease and stroke.

Blood pressure are often classified into four categories:

Normal blood pressure – below 120 / 80 mm Hg.
Prehypertension – 120-139 / 80-89 mm Hg.
Stage 1 hypertension – 140-159 / 90-99 mm Hg.
Stage 2 hypertension – 160 / 100 mm Hg or higher.

19-40 Common
41-60 Very common
60+ Very common
