i gotta tell u folks, teaching is tough but, it is a lovely profession, it feels good to know that u r helping to groom minds, i shouldn't always be about the money, sometimes its about making the world a better place.

Teaching surely ought to be a respectable and lovely profession. But what if it cannot put food on your table.

Your lines were true once upon a time in Nigeria, maybe in 80s and earlier. My dad is a retired high school principal . . worked back in the 70s and 80s because he felt he had to give back to his community. He was able to do everything his mates did . . and maybe even more. That was when my country was good.

But now, being a teacher is like a curse - even high school drop-outs now teach in secondary schools! You cannot survive on the irregular salary without selling handouts (in secondary school now o). So I heard.

Nigeria is all about money now unfortunately. Forget patriotism cos the leaders dont even care about you!

I for one enjoy teaching. Its something I have been doing since I was 14. I started from teaching primary school pupils then secondary school and so on. It is a very rewarding experience. I have even done a lot of volunteer work in Naija secondary schools.

My experience in my volunteer work was however saddening. I volunteered in a senior secondary school in lagos where there were only 3 maths teachers some of who doubled as physics and chemistry teachers. The teachers were expected to cover the whole SSS1 to SSS3. Considering that each level had about 4/5 arms with approximately 60 students or more in each arm, translates to a minimum of 720 students. It even got worse when I got there as one teacher went on 'training' and did not resume back till after I left. The other one saw that I was enjoying what I did and pushed most of the responsibilities on me. So even though I volunteered to teach only maths and maybe further mathematics when I got there, I ended up teaching Maths. F.Maths, Physics to all classes. I would start teaching at 8am and wont stop till 2.15 pm! ofcourse with the normal breaks in between.

However, I don't regret it as I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was also rewarded that the students loved the classes and sometimes even sacrificed their break periods just to continue learning.

I am also disappointed at some of our teachers. The focus now is to make money from the students and their parents. I think teachers should devote more time in personal development. If you are a career teacher and not just there because there is no work, spend more time in developing yourself. Luckily there are loads of resources online for free that you can use. Government also needs to do more.

Finally, on a controversial issue, I personally think that NYSC corpers MUST be made to teach in secondary schools during the compulsory NYSC year. We lack teachers and this is a very cheap and easy way of filling the vaccuum.

I enjoy teaching tho I would like a change preferably to an oil company not bank. With a 2.1 B.Sc degree I teach in a private sch in Warri. The main thing is not your salary but d private lesson where u can charge btw 10-25k for 2 hours a week per child. Some make between 50k to a 100k on private level. I still prefer dis somehow than earning 40k in a public sch as a fresh graduate. Anyway it depends on what u want.

This is not a bad idea at all. The good thing is you can plan your work week, work only when you want to (outside of your job) and still put in more hours to make some extra dough when you need to. Compare that to working in a bank in which you got almost no life.

I know guys here in the states who have professional jobs but still tutor kids on a personal level not only to make some extra bucks but also because of their love for teaching.

It's interesting to hear the different views about the present state of teaching in Nigeria. Not surprising to hear not much have changed about the perception and attitude of the Government towards the profession. I would like to know what the present state of affairs is at the moment in terms of pupil behaviour and how much authority teachers do have to deal with it.
I teach in a UK secondary school and so have lost touch a bit with education in Nigeria.

That shows how commercialised education has become. What happens to parents who can't afford it? Do proper teaching and learning takes place in the classroom or is it saved for private lessons?

don't u think teachers in Nigeria should be earning more than our University lecturers?

I get ur concern and its maybe a source for major worries. But then, if a graduate can't 'teach' secondary school students, then I personally think the certificate needs to be questioned. and where else can that person work?
Re: Teachers Forum by Nija4Life(m): 10:07pm On Dec 14, 2009
Holding a university degree doesn't necessarily mean you can teach. A degree can give you good subject knowledge which is only one of many aspects of teaching. Teaching like any other profession requires training in lesson planning, delivery, behaviour and classroom management, Pastoral system and other professional duties.

The truth is that salary cant solve your daily needs so one needs something to add to what he/she is doing as support.

Yes, i teach in naija secondary school in lagos. But i need a change i am fed up.
why are you fed up ?
Because of you are getting enough income from the job, huh, Try and get something else doing to support you financially.

i gotta tell u folks, teaching is tough but, it is a lovely profession, it feels good to know that u r helping to groom minds, i shouldn't always be about the money, sometimes its about making the world a better place.
i agree with you. being able to transfer knowledge to someone else is fun because when the person grows to become important personality in future, you made that person and you will be happy with you self.

well explained and understood. Is not everybody that knows how to teach unless the are trained if not they cant transfer the knowledge.

Honestly, None of you there would choose teaching as a proffession if not for the last result or to use it as a stepping stone as others claim.
Many of you have said sweet things about the proffession but do you pray to take it up and live all your live on it? i know the answer is NO! Why are we deceiving ourselves?

Nobody is deceiving anyone here, every ones career has a contribution to make in a country, it's not all about money, passion is also attached to every work, when you have passion for your work you will be glad doing it .
You have a role to play in the destiny of Nigeria.

I'm sure many people will take to teaching in Nigeria if the pay was right. In a country where unemployment never ceases to slow down, it is only natural that people will settle for whatever puts food on the table. I think what you are asking is a hypothetical question which either a yes or no will not suffice in the current scheme of things.
