The President of the South African Football Association, Danny Jordan has hinted that Africa’s football body, the Confederation of African Football will demand for an extra 5 spots at the 2026 World cup.

Africa currently gets 5 slots and the request will push the continent’s representatives at the showpiece event to 10.

Speaking on Wednesday, Jordan says the idea is been supported by all other football associations.

“All associations back the idea to expand the World Cup and there is the hope that Africa can have 10 places in future,” he said

The new World Cup format, which will see the finals comprising 16 groups of three teams before a 32-team knockout stage is part of President Gianni Infantino key proposal for his tenure.

It will have 80 matches in total from the original 64 games.

Europe has also asked for 3 spots to bring their total to 16.

Asia are expected to get eight to nine places, and South America, could get six slots.

The changes will take effect from the 2026 World Cup as the formats for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups has already been decided.

The 2026 tournament is expected to be played in North America with USA, Canada or Mexico key contenders to host the historic tournament.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has also hinted he will favour a co-hosting of the event.

Germany are the current holders of the World Cup while Brazil are record holders with 5 titles.

FIFA will debate on the continental allocations on May 2017
