INTRODUCING THE TROPICAL APPLE.

For weather related reasons, Nigeria does not produce apples even though there has been a steady increase in its demand by middle class and large retail outlets.

Many still believe that apple cannot grow in Nigerian. But every year, Nigerians spend millions of dollars importing the fruit from South Africa and other European countries.

The reason Nigeria spends so much to import apple is not far fetched. People often eat apple raw but it can also be found in many prepared foods and drinks.

And there are many health benefits thought to result from eating apples.Statistics indicate that Nigeria imported 1,882 tonnes, 7,857 tonnes and 32,317 tonnes of apples between 2011, 2012 and 2013 respectively from South Africa.

Industry watchers said these figures have increased tremendously in the last four years as millions of dollars is expended on importation of apples.

However, apart from statistics available in 2011, 2012, 2013, there is no recent data to indicate amount of apples imported and consumed in Nigeria, but large numbers of apples are imported and brought in through the nation’s borders. But the demand for the product continues to increase indicating that there is a sustainable market for apples in Nigeria, which is largely being driven by the increasing preference for fresh fruit over processed fruit.

It is clearly stated that apples that are sold at shops, in hotels and Nigerian markets have been harvested before they get ripe and they take weeks and months before getting here. Even the apples are injected somehow to preserve them.

There is good news now for farmers who want to venture into this business. Today, there is a specie of apple called semi-arid apple, also known as ‘wambugu’ apple, which matches Nigeria’s weather conditions.

This basically means that the apple can grow and do well in Nigeria, as government is looking for a way of reducing import bills. The semi-arid apple was developed by Peter Wambugu, a man who used to work as a mechanic in the streets of Nyeri, central Kenya, now a trained agriculture expert.

The semi-arid apple can grow to climate of up to 36°, which is within Nigeria’s weather conditions because the apple specifically is for hot and warm areas and it has a lifespan of 50 years. The apple can grow in any West African country and anywhere in the world.

The semi-arid apple bears up to 500 to 1000 fruits on each tree every season and it has two seasons in a year, starting between July, August, December and January.

This apple won the best apple in the world that is able to grow anywhere in any climate and soil. The apples are organically grown and thus, they need good manure and water for them to grow better. They can grow to climate of up to 36°c. The apple takes nine months to first fruiting and one acre requires 310 plants.”

On planting. When you get your seedling, allow 3m by 3m or 8.5ft x 8.5ft spacing from one plant to another. Planting depth is 2fts by 2fts deep by 2fts hole .Mix 1 bucket of manure with topsoil and return back to the hole later; pour 20 liters of water mix with the soil well and plant the seedling! Later do mulching! For pest control, since this apple has very few pests, it would be able to grow with very minimal maintenance. Climate and soil type are no problem for the semi-arid apple variety. They grow in both loamy soil and sandy loamy soil. However ,very clay and waterlogged areas should be avoided. We have a transplanting video guide and PDF guide for those interested in buying the seedlings for planting in home garden and the open field.

THE COCONUT AND OIL PALM MARKET .

Coconut and oil palm are the two important plantation crops grown in the wet tropics. Both the palms are monocots and produce oil from their fruits. Oil palm currently occupies the topmost position in the international vegetable oil market, while coconut is a palm with diverse uses in addition to being an oil crop.

Out of the two palms, oil palm has shown a spectacular boom in the world oil trade during the last 60 years. Systematic genetic improvement programmes of both these palms have been carried out since the first quarter of the last century due to the importance of oil palm and coconut.

Oil palm and coconut share much similar challenges in their genetic improvement for better traits owing both of these being perennial monocot palms of massive stature, cross-pollinating heterogeneous populations and certain other genetic implications. Despite these inherent constraints, considerable gains have been achieved in the breeding of both oil palm and coconut through the transfer of desirable genes from diverse sources into the cultivated material.

African oil palm populations have been most important in transfer of genes from populations of different origins. In addition, interspecific hybridization between African and American oil palms has also been carried out with success. Similarly, in coconut, much advancement has been made with respect to yield components, precocity and shorter stature using intervarietal and interpopulation gene transfer methods.

These gene transfer methods have helped to bring oil palm to the topmost position in the world oil trade and coconut to provide vegetable oil and livelihoods to millions of people in the coconut-growing countries like Nigeria.

We supply quality and hybrid Oil palms and Dwarf coconut varieties. You can call SEEDWORLD LTD 07082638957(Whatsapp) for all your seedlings .Email : seedworldintegratedconceptltd@gmail.com

OIL PALM INVESTMENT IN NIGERIA.

PZ, Wilmar In $650m Oil Palm Investment
A Singapore-based Wilmar International and PZ Cusson Nigeria have entered into a joint venture and invested more than $650 million in oil palm plantations and processing facilities in Nigeria.
For instance, the company planted almost 26,500 hectares of oil palm in Cross River State.
The company’s investments in oil palm plantations and associated infrastructures in Cross River State currently stand at about N45 billion (approximately $150 million). These include a processing plant at Calaro Estate in Akamkpa Local Government Area in Cross River State. The estate consists a 45 tonne per hour palm oil mill (POM) and a 2.5 tonne per hour kernel crushing plant (KCP).
Its Chief Executive Officer, Christos Giannopoulos, said the POM basically converts fresh fruit bunches (FFB) into palm oil. This process involves extracting red palm oil from the fleshy outer mesocarp of the palm fruit. The product is known as Crude Palm Oil (CPO), similar to the red palm oil that is sold in the local market. The KCP, on the other hand, extracts palm kernel oil (PKO) from the palm kernels. The company’s palm oil mill at Ibad Oil Palm Estate in Cross River has the capacity of 20 tonnes per hour in terms of FFB processing.
He said the company has invested around N20 billion in an oil palm refinery in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
To the company, Nigeria has the biggest market in Africa and is the largest consumer of the palm oil in the region.
Currently, there is a massive gap between demand and supply. Estimates of this deficit are around 600,000 to 700,000 tonnes per annum.
Last year, he added that the company launched its Pilot Out growers Scheme. The goal is to support local farmers to develop viable and sustainable oil palm businesses.

As part of the programme, the company makes available, high quality seedlings for farmers, training them on Best Management Practices (BMPs) to optimise their yields.
For stakeholders, while there are significant efforts to reduce the gap between demand and supply of palm oil in Nigeria, there is massive smuggling of palm oil across the borders to the tune of 400,000 tons per annum due to which the federal government loses millions of dollars in revenue from duty and tax collection.

You can contact SEEDWORLD LTD 07082638957 for your quality tenera hybrid oil palm seedlings supply.

*INTRODUCING THE IMPORTED DWARF HIGH YIELD PRODUCING COCONUT*

Exotic coconut variety produces 150 to 200 coconuts a year compared to local variety’s that produces 50-80 coconuts per year.

This high-yielding open pollinated (op) coconut variety were first imported from Vietnam and Kerala state of India three years ago.

Local variety takes 8-10 years to bear fruit, but the short and high-yielding Vietnam variety will give fruit within three years.

The height of the coconut tree is maximum one foot when it comes to production.

We are introducing Vietnam imported coconut variety because they bear fruits within a short time. Farmers will be more benefited farming this variety, and production will rise three times than usual.

Our Nigerian soil is suitable for coconut farming as it grows fast areas with well distributed rainfall.

For instance bangladesh in India annually imports 20,000 tonnes of copra, dried kernel of the coconut, from which coconut oil is extracted, for manufacturing different branded coconut oil as local production is only 500 tonnes.

Bangladesh imports coconut copra from Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, India, Philippines, Indonesia and Fiji.

For further enquiries old call SEEDWORLD LTD 07082638957 for pricing/order of this imported coconut variety .

*INTRODUCING THE OLIVE TREE*

Scientific name: Olea europaea L.
Family: Oleacea,
Oleaster (O. europaea var. oleaster).

There are many varieties of olives but our interest is the Kalamata olives from Greece.

*BRIEF HISTORY OF OLIVES*

Olive cultivation dates back more than 6,000 years and it is still flourishing today, not only in its countries of origin, but now in most areas of the world.

The olive is native to the Mediterranean region, tropical and central Asia and various parts of Africa. The olive has a history almost as long as that of Western civilization, its development being one of civilized man's first accomplishments.

At a site in Spain, carbon-dating has shown olive seed found there to be 8,000 years old. The cultivation of O. europaea may have been initiated independently in both Crete and Syria.

Archeological evidence suggests that olives were grown in Crete as long ago as 2,500 B.C. From Crete and Syria olives spread to Greece, Italy and other parts of the Mediterranean area.

Over the years, the olive has been the symbol of peace, wisdom, glory, fertility, power and pureness.

*WHAT MORE TO KNOW ABOUT THE OLIVES*

*Flower induction and fruit-set*

The tree is mature enough to produce flowers and fruits at the age of about four years.

There are two basic products: olive oil and table olives. Olive oil products dominate the marketplace and 80% to 90% of olives produced are devoted to olive oil production. Most interest is in producing high quality extra virgin (EV) olive oil, for which there is good demand.

*CLIMATE FOR GROWING OLIVES*

Different olives adapt to different temperatures. Some are subtropical in nature others require humid conditions. It is, therefore, best suited to a Mediterranean-type of climate.

Some olive varieties, such as those grown in Egypt, Tunisia or Israel, bloom and fruit with very little winter chilling, whilst other varieties require more chilling for a normal flower differentiation.

*SOIL TYPE TO GROW OLIVES*

Olives grow well on almost any well-drained and aerated soil with pH values of 6.5 – 8.5. Therefore, sites where water stands during rainy periods or where ground water is shallower than 1.2 meters deep should be avoided.

Olive trees are tolerant to mild saline conditions, but extremely salty or sodic soils should be avoided. Olives have a relatively shallow root system and consequently they only require a 1.0 – 1.5 meter deep soil profile without any serious physical limitations. Olives prefer moderately fine textured soils ranging from sandy to silty clay, loamy soils.

*PRUNNING OF OLIVE TREES*

Proper pruning is important for the olive tree. Pruning both regulates production and shapes the tree for easier harvest. The trees can withstand radical pruning, so it is relatively easy to keep them at a desired height. The problem of alternate bearing can also be partially amended with careful annual pruning.

*There are three main types of pruning*:

(a) *Regulated Pruning* :

It aims to develop the tree’s frame and is of great importance in the first years of the tree’s life.

(b) *Pruning for fruiting* :

The aim of this pruning is to induce productive branches to form fruits, leaving the structural branches unaffected. Additionally, it maintains uniform production in terms of yield and quality, a feature that is particularly important in table olive varieties.

(c) *Renovating pruning*

This aims to stimulate sprouting in order to rejuvenate senescent trees.

*THINNING OF OLIVES*

Wherever table olives enjoy special premium for greater fruit sizes, it is advisable to thin the fruits, when bloom is plentiful only.
Spray the foliage 10 days after full bloom.

*IRRIGATION OF OLIVE TREES*

Because of its small leaves with their protective cuticle and hairy underside that slow transpiration, the olive tree survives even extended dry periods.

However, this defense system is at the expense of growth and productivity of the tree. Once established, olive trees are among the most drought-resistant trees in the world.

But the olive tree is not a desert plant. It needs regular watering to thrive. Insufficient water will cause the plantation to suffer and even die if left too dry for too long.

Thus, olive yield is greatly increased by applying small amounts of water. Moreover, if commercial yields are desired greater amounts of water will be needed, provided that soil humidity does not become excessive.

There are 2 – 3 extremely critical periods, during which soil moisture must be kept optimal, for maximum bearing, as follows:

For oil production, the most critical periods to avoid water stress are fruit-set and oil accumulation.

For fresh fruit production, fruit-set and fruit growth, stages # 1 & 3 are the most critical.

Olive trees are very sensitive to over irrigation and will not perform well in waterlogged soils. Waterlogged soil, often a result of poor drainage, causes poor soil aeration and root deterioration and can lead to the death of the trees.

Trees cultivated in saturated soils are more susceptible to varying weather conditions and soil borne pathogens such as phytophthora and verticillium.

Drip irrigation in many diverse agro-ecological conditions brought about considerably higher olive oil yield (30% – 50%), water savings (30% – 45%), and improvement in oil qualitative characteristics, in comparison to rain-fed and surface flood irrigation methods.

*FERTILIZATION OF OLIVE TREES*

Intensively grown olive trees will greatly benefit from a good nutrition regime. During the first years of the plantation a premium slow-release fertilizer, augmented with trace elements, is recommended.

Alternatively, soluble fertilizers may be used with high efficiency, especially by Nutrigation. If the fertilizers are broadcasted separately, be sure to water very well after application.

Many growers in Mediterranean countries apply organic fertilizers every other year. Organically derived fertilizers are available, but they are often markedly more expensive per nutritive element unit.

Top dressing with organic material such as composted manure or kitchen compost can be done, but the grower should consult carefully before using it because it is difficult to achieve a good balance of nutritional elements by this method.

It is environmentally responsible but requires more study and understanding by the grower. Always avoid placing compost or any fertilizer next to the trunk of the tree.

Whatever type of fertilizer is used, it is best to feed lightly and often during the growing season. Avoid heavy applications of soluble fertilizers that could damage plants and leach or run-off into groundwater.

*HARVESTING OF OLIVES*

Fruits that are to be processed as green olives are picked while they are still green but have reached full size.

They can also be picked for processing at any later stage, through full ripeness. Ripe olives bruise easily and should be handled with care. Mold is also a problem for the fruit between picking and curing. There are several classical ways of curing olives.

A common method is the lye-cure process in which green or near-ripe olives are soaked in a series of lye solutions for a period of time to remove the bitter ingredients, then transferred to water and finally to a mild saline solution.

Other processing methods include water curing, salt curing and Greek-style curing. Both green-cured and ripe-cured olives are popular as a relish or snack. The black color of black olives is obtained by exposure to air after lye extraction and has nothing to do with ripeness.

For olive oil production, irrigation should be stopped for the weeks leading up to harvest to avoid accumulation of high moisture content in the fruit and difficulties during oil extraction.

Optimum moisture content is 50%. Use freshly picked olives (no longer than 24 – 48 hours from picking to processor) for producing extra virgin olive oil. Harvest olive fruits at the correct time. Immature fruit will give less oil.

Dwarf hybrid Coconut is more profitable than cashew per area. The. estimated revenue per hectare is between 2.4-3m per year for at least 60 years while cashew is max 1m per hectare.
There are far more profitable trees but some have more costs (palm tree, cocoa, pawpaw) while others are almost maintenance free eg cashew, moringa, date palm, etc

If I am going for a plantation, I won't go for what my revenues will be below at least 3m per hectare per year with less labour cost.

This our Kogi na useless area. No govt incentive, herdsman wahala, expensive land and plenty people are hungry.

I am looking to the future on how to create a buyback program where I will give people my new imported moringa seeds and in turn buy back from them. These will lift a lot of people out of poverty.

I just started 10 trees in my house in a nursery and see how it goes. I am still looking for a hectare to plant about a 1000 seeds and obtain irrigation kits for the dry season. Agric looks like the best way to multiply wealth. Some of us fit move anywhere to achieve this.
