The Nigerian beer market, estimated at $2.7-3.5 billion, remains relatively one of the most resilient aspects of the national economy. Beer is the most populous alcoholic beverage in the country, making up about 96 per cent of alcohol sales.

Analysts at GTI, a leading investment banking group, say beer consumption experienced an average growth of 10 per cent in the last 10 years. They have predicted a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 13 per cent in the next 10 years.

In a May, last year report, GTI Research Lead Analyst, Mr. Chuks Anyanwu, gave a breakdown market share of beer consumption as Lager (58 per cent) of the market share; Stout (27 per cent), leaving 15 per cent to Malt. In terms of the consumption channels, 40 per cent of beer consumers drink in beer parlours, 28 per cent through provisional store purchases, 13 per cent via informal convenience spots, while the rest go through kiosks, restaurants and hotels and others.

The analyst said the growth potentials in the brewery industry cannot be over emphasised.

HOW DOES THIS NUMBERS TRANSLATE TO THE NO OF BOTTLES?

Nigerian Breweries recorded sales of almost N300 billion in 2015 while Guinness recorded sales of N275 billion totaling almost =N=600 Billion (About $3 billion) which is about 3% of our GDP and this numbers keep soaring. That is about 3 billion bottles of beer and when distributed across 170 million people is about 200 bottles per person a year.

WHO DRANK IT?

The average Nigerian is either a Christian or a Muslim. Both religions enjoined adherents to avoid alcohol. So, who drank N600 billion worth of beer in one year? A country of unassailable contradictions..

More churches and mosques than anywhere else on the continent.

Please who drank it?

This is interesting because It does not include paraga, and other assorted foreign and local drinks like Ogogoro, palm wine, alomo, kerewa, etc. If these are added, only God knows…!

beer has no religion..
it connects everyone, irrespective of race, ethnicity,
skin color, gender, sexual preference(gays, BIs, straight)
quarrels, conflicts, strife, beef, etc are best settled in a bar.
