6GB RAM may become mainstream, but for now, especially for android platform smartphones, software optimization and better ram management are enough.

I assume you're referring to android devices because apple had never been interested in >4GB. Hence your question is ; Do We Really Need 6GB Of RAM On Our android devices?

If you understand android's ART/ Dalvik java memory management? You'll not ask stupid questions.

Of course it won't matter much for ios devices.
java is android greatest enemy...android device with 10gb Ram will still lag.

Same way Apple wasn't interested in phones with big screens and look at them now. Some years back we didn't need laptops with more than 512mb ram but now I have 16gig ram on my laptop.
These reminds me of my first ever laptop. An hp omnibook i got as a gift back in 2002. My laptop had 512mb ram and 10gb storage, and i was feeling cool back then. i was the only guy with a laptop in my faculty at uni.

Only shortsighted people would say tech shouldnt advance. Norway is banning gasoline cars by 2025. i trust other EU countries to follow Norway's lead. There are now several start up fims producing cars that solely run on batteries. Jaguar, Hyundai and Toyota have made such cars too. Tesla cars can drive itself...

Processor speeds keep increasing too. Phones with 835 is the big thing in 2017, ram size would not be left behind.
I remember a guy on here said 4k screen where useless on phones, but 4k videos are already taking over youtube. Of course my phone should be able to stream a 4k videos and push out the graphics just the way the producer wanted it to be seen.

What people need to realise is that tech is not stagnant. If only everyone can visit developed countries just to see how far african countries have been left behind, then the op would not be asking such question.

your comment shows u are naive in programming.. Android and IOS cant go beyond what u do currently becausr of their CPU architecture......android cant be smoother and more efficient compared to IOS,until it changes her programming language

The performance of a smart phone or PC is directly proportional to the Ram, also directly proportional to the processor and clock speed.
If u increase a ram without increasing the clock speed and the processor, u will not get any significant change in the performance of the smart phone.
At times, if I check the size of memory utilised in my 2gb ram phone, it's not always more than 1200mb.
Thereby leaving up-to 800mb of the ram unused.
Even though I do hv about 40 processes running concurrently in the ram.
For now, we don't really need the 6gb ram.
Though heavier machines /smartphones used for heavier tasks like AutoCAD can need it for smooth and efficient running.
But if u increase the ram size without increasing the processor capacity, u will not get significant results.

your second sentence is totally wrong...android and ios are of same architecture(ARM architecture) but different programming language(java vs swift)...ur bugatti analogy is also wrong..it should have been bugati-lamborghini comparism, not bugatti-keke

More RAM on a phone doesn't necessarily mean it would run smoother than one with less. Yeah, you would be able to run more apps in the background without bogging down the device but software optimisation is more important.

Take for example, my 3GB RAM Android phone lags on performing certain tasks while my iPhone with 2GB RAM has never lagged. Processor speed, optimisation and performance is more important than RAM size.

This was what I was expecting to see, the thing is AOSP (better known as android) has always been resource hungry, when I mean resource,I am talking about things like memory and power. But google has been doing a great job at optimising it over the years.

Manufacturers of smartphones nowadays (esp in d android market) have engaged in what is popularly called 'spec wars', this involves packing d smartphone with mad specs like UHD screen resolution, 8gigs of ram, octacore or even decacore chipsets etc. All these are not needed especially the RAM, what is needed is optimization of the software to b less resource hungry.

This is where I envy iOS, am not really sure how it's done, but all u need on a flagship iPhone is 2gigs of ram, 3gigs is an overkill. All these manufacturers are just trying to justify d crazy prices they charge for smartphones by overkilling d spec sheet

Sofware optimization and chipset speed determines speed over ram size.

Andriod is gradually doing a good job with its software, Adriod 7.0 is so smooth I thought it was IOS

iPhone 6s Plus with 2gig ram will out perform any android phone with 4 to 6gig ram.

Pls don't start with this ur iPhone egocentric comments. If u wanna compare ur iPhone to an android device, pls do So with an android phone/brand in d same price range as it, like Samsung, HTC, LG, Sony etc, not infinix, tecno and d likes.

The advantage iPhone has is that all It's components are in house. The CPU is designed specifically for d OS, apple has kept d manufacturing rights of iOS devices to itself, meaning there are no variations in d experience u have while using the iPhone, Google tried it with d Nexus devices, it worked, to an extent but ppl still thought of android as cheapskate, then they decided to rebrand their own phones to make it sound premium, they came with Google Pixel, cost as much as d iPhone and could match it in every aspect even beat it in d camera department.

So u c, my point is that android phones that cost as much as iPhones can match or even beat d iPhone counterpart. The only area is the CPU and GPU, and that is where optimising d OS to utilize the hardware wins it for iPhones.

We don't have enough battery life on the 2GB RAM PHONES to power with long enough.
The problem with 6GB PHONES, will be battery life
So I would say it's a future spec phone till battery technology improves and no Android app is so ram demanding for now, a 3CB RAM is just perfect from now till next year ending.

Apple making big screen phones is solely because they were losing to d competition, other brands were churning out 5inch devices, and a lot of Apple customers got enticed, left their iPhones for big screen android devices.

Apple showed great business skill by swallowing it's pride and adapting, once they improved screen size and resolution, they started getting back their fans and even stole some off the competition.

C# and swift are the best alternatives.tho, those languages are owned by microsoft and apple respectively, the problem is:android future will now be determined by those companies....secondly,all android apps will be re-written into one of the languages, which will take years to do and there is no assurance that developers will support it.....so,the best thing is for google to remain with java

10 years ago. 512mb ram on a phone was huge.

I used a symbian 12 years ago. This phone was top of its class and it had only 32mb ram or something close.

Back then i would have said 128mb ram was pointless, but phone apps these days are ram intensive. Several apps especially games are now over 1g in size! These monster apps need huge ram to push its graphics and other sleek features they come with.

iPhones with smaller batteries last longer than Android with bigger batteries? I don't think so.

It's like saying the iPhone 6 battery 1810mAH will last longer than the Tecno L9+ that is 5000mAH simply because it's iPhone :/

Spot on. This is the reason why I now use an iPhone. When my upgrade was due, I had a choice between Google Pixel and iPhone 7 but went with the latter due to the underlying problems Android devices have consistently had. Optimisation is what makes a device a good daily driver which is why iPhone is the best smartphone money can buy.

Funny how these Android devices with mouth watering specs come short against iPhone 7/7+ in benchmark tests. Most Android phones look like concept phones and are not really practical which is why they have a very short lifespan. For example, my Dad's old iPhone 4 (2011) is still running fine although not as fast as the newer iterations obviously while my HTC Sensation XE (2012) is stuck in boot loop and battery lasts for just under an hour.

No,

I'll tell you why

I did write an article about Smartphones one shouldn't buy in 2017 and I did touch this area check it out here http://www.droidpost.com/2017/01/smartphones-must-not-buy-in-2017-guide.html

Most phones run on processors that are 32bit and a 32bit cpu has a bus width of 32 which means that's the highest amount of data at an instant, I know this is too technical... computer scientist would understand. but bottom line is a 32bit processor can access/use maximum of 4G of ram no matter that amount available.
The above is just the technical part.

but if the device is 64bit fine for the 6G ram but currently no application needs ot

Now, RAM too is just a container(albeit temporary) for resources/assets of an application, so it doesn't determine how fast your device handles proceses. 4G ram is best and cam handle any app or multitasking you want to do on your smartphone anything more than that is marketing gimmicks started by the Chinese guys. Many won't tell you it's actually your processor that handles/determines how fast your phone would be

Exactly. This is why I'm strongly against MediaTech processors and advise against getting devices running them except all you do is make calls, text and occasional browsing.

Devices powered by Snapdragon, Exynos and Fusion A Chips are more powerful, optimised and power consumption friendly than MT processors.

The iPhone is more efficient because of the language used to write apps. Android apps are mostly written in Java which has a garbage collector, while the iPhone doesn't allow Objective C to use a garbage collector.

Most top end android phones, use the same processor or a similar processor to the iPhone.
