Omo-onile(Translated:children of land owners) as they are called, are a real threat to land owners and builders in Nigeria most especially in Lagos. They are mainly the original or earliest inhabitants of the different areas of the state, hence they claim ownership of the area. The Omo-Oniles have for long posed a huge threat to land owners and property developers in the state.

They are more in Lagos because it is one of the busiest and richest cities in Nigeria. They usually rear their ugly heads once they notice that construction activities is about to or has commenced on a landed property. The question is how do they know? They know when someone commences work by strolling around the area all day. They are jobless, hence they have all the time in the world to look for victims. The funniest thing with their modus operandi is that they usually don't have fixed, regulated fees. If you dress well maybe in agbada or suit and drive an expensive SUV, they bill you more.

So what's the solution to these snakes called Omo-onile?

Lagos state government presently under Governor Ambode has really been trying hard to curb their excesses. The State government has, commendably, enacted a law called the Property protection law; to check the activities of this unscrupulous land acquirers and extortionists by passing a bill that addresses the issue.
Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has signed a new law outlawing land grabbing and extortion of real estate developers in the state. The properties protection law was enacted as the appropriate response to the menace of these thugs called Omo-Oniles, On paper, this new response couched in the “law to prohibit forceful entry and illegal occupation of landed properties, violent and fraudulent conducts in relation to landed properties in Lagos State and for connected purposes,” is a deviation from the traditional norm of treating the miscreants, who are generally seen as the nemesis of land developers, with kid gloves. Also judged from its contents, the new law is a big blow to the power of the Omo-Oniles.
The Lagos State government has also set up a taskforce to check the menace of land-grabbing in the state. During the inauguration of the taskforce, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, said the Ambode administration was determined to apply the full weight of the law to permanently address the Omo-Onile issue, saying the havoc and unrest they have caused residents is no longer acceptable.
Kazeem said henceforth, anybody who used threat or intimidation to dispossess people of their legitimate property will be punished in accordance with Sections 52, 53 and 281 of the Criminal Law of the state.

Hence, when building and confronted with omo-onile trouble, don't fight with them. Rather, engage the services of a lawyer andeet them in court. If you have the right documents on the land, you will surely win them.
