I came to SON UNTH and things weren't how I thought they
would be.
I'm over 20, but I'm treated like a toddler, told to kneel
down, raise my hands up and close my eyes.
The hostel lacks water. We pray for rainy season always
cause only then can we get water in abundance. This same hostel lacks light. Last year, we spent over 3
months in the hostel without light. Jesus!!
Any student or ex student of the school know how lonely
and quiet and empty the environment is during the festive
period.
Few of us that stayed in the hostel during the holiday were scared as there had been repeated cases of theft and even
an attempted rape in a nearby hostel. The light was repaired
in January this year. We paid for the repairs ourselves. Less
than a month later, the power supply for the whole of old
site was cut off. Now, for about 3 weeks, even a month,
we've been without light. Medical students protested, and theirs was restored within a
week. We protested and they sent us out of school.
Our septic tank got full and even needed repairs. We
contributed the money amongst ourselves and we did the
needful.
We made complaints of snakes living with us in the hostel. We've killed more than 5 snakes, If I'm not mistaken. I know
how long it took the management to respond to our
complaints.
Sometime last year, for more than 5 months, we were
without security.
Even the one we have is nothing to write home about. A month ago, a hostel close to us was robbed. Students
beaten. Laptops, phones, clothes and other valuables stolen.
Most of the students affected were School of Nursing
students.
We don't have a school bus. None that was provided for us
by the hospital management. Medical students have one. Community health officers have
one.
Why not School of Nursing?
Is there some kind of unforgivable sin that our ancestors in
this school committed or something?
School of Information Management get water supply very often. As often as once a week or thereabout. SON?
Let's not even go there. The whole of last year, the number
of times we were supplied water, I can count on one hand.
Let me not even venture into stipend. We spend 2 years out
of 3 in the hospital, working our asses off. We work
afternoon shifts. Work weekend shifts. But we're not paid, only the staff nurses are.
We're now in recession. Things are hard. Transportation fare
has increased. We can't keep repairing everything when we
made a payment of 10,000 for developmental fees.
Our school fees is #50,000, and they tell you to compare it
with Mission Schools of Nursing. Hell No!! I will not. I know how much they pay before
applying for school of Nursing.
Im in a federal school, not a private institution.
We're angry. Madly angry.
We can no longer keep quiet and pretend that everything is
okay. Everything is not.
They're angry that we involved NTA channel station.
But they've not seen anything.
We'll not stop here. We'll go farther than this. We'll report to
more higher authorities till student nurses in SONUNTH are
treated like the awesome nurses that we are and not slaves. PS: we were sent out of the hostel. They called policemen to
throw us out.
Are we thugs?
Are we hooligans?
Are we animals?
We carried out a peaceful protest like civilized individuals that we are, and they decided to treat us like goats.
So many people are stranded with their ATM cards in the
locked hostel. No means of going back home. Mine was
locked inside!
Buhari is not the problem in this country. Buhari is not my
problem. My problem is that person seated on that seat that has
refused to make my life as a student easy for me.
