Autism Awareness Week---seeing The World From A Different Angle by msbyao: 12:46pm On Mar 28, 2017
It's World Autism Awareness Week.

This week has been set aside to promote awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
People living with Autism simply have a different way of doing things. It's not a disability, just a different kind of ability.
Early intervention makes a world of difference in raising independent children or in the recovery process.

Once you notice any of the below red flags, please seek help.
It is a spectrum disorder, therefore symptoms differ from person to person.

Here are Red Flags to look out for according to Baby Centre

Signs of autism in babies younger than 12 months old

At this age, picking up on signs of autism involves paying attention to whether your child is meeting developmental milestones. Here are some things to watch for:

1. Doesn't show interest in faces.
2. Doesn't make eye contact, doesn't smile, and may even seem to look right through you.
3. Doesn't always react to sounds. Doesn't respond to his name, doesn't turn around to see where a sound is coming from, or doesn't appear startled when he hears a loud noise. In other situations, his hearing may seem fine.
4. Doesn't like being cuddled or touched.
5. Doesn't show interest in typical baby games, like peekaboo.
6. Doesn't babble or show other early signs of talking.
7. Doesn't use gestures, like reaching for you when she wants to be held.

Signs of autism in toddlers 12 to 24 months old

1. Doesn't use gestures. Doesn't shake his head yes or no. Doesn't wave goodbye or point to things he wants.
2. Doesn't point out objects to show interest in the world around her. By 14 to 16 months, most kids point to get your attention to share something they're interested in, such as a puppy or new toy.
3. Doesn't use single words by 16 months or two-word phrases by 24 months.
4. Loses verbal or social skills. Used to babble or speak a few words, or showed interest in people, but now he doesn't.
5. Withdraws. Seems to tune people out and be in her own world.
6. Walks on his toes or doesn't walk at all.

I'm willing to answer questions.
Do you have a child on the spectrum or know someone on the spectrum or suspect someone is on the spectrum, let's discuss and create awareness.

Autism in Nigeria is increasing by the day.Have you observed any child that prefers to play alone and doesn't "show" objects to adults around during such plays? Is your child's speech delayed? If you suspect something is wrong, please seek help early.
