What does the Bible say about Christian tithing? Should a Christian tithe?

Many Christians struggle with the issue of tithing. In some churches giving is over-emphasised. At the same time, many Christians refuse to submit to the biblical exhortations about making offerings to the Lord. Tithing/giving is intended to be a joy and a blessing. Sadly, that is sometimes not the case in the church today.

Tithing is an Old Testament concept. The tithe was a requirement of the Law in which the Israelites were to give 10 percent of the crops they grew and the livestock they raised to the tabernacle/temple

Leviticus 27:30 And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD's: it is holy unto the LORD

Numbers 18:26 speak this to the Levites, and say unto them, When you take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall offer up an heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe.

Deuteronomy 14:22 you shall truly tithe all the increase of your seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.

14:23 And you should eat before the LORD your God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of your corn, of your wine, and of your oil, and the firstlings of your herds and of your flocks; that you might learn to fear the LORD your God always.

2 Chronicles 31:5 And as soon as the commandment came abroad, the children of Israel brought in abundance the first fruits of corn, wine, and oil, and honey, and of all the increase of the field; and the tithe of all things they brought in abundantly.

31:6 And concerning the children of Israel and Judah, that dwelt in the cities of Judah, they also brought in the tithe of oxen and sheep, and the tithe of holy things which were consecrated unto the LORD their God, and laid them by heaps.

In fact, the Old Testament Law required multiple tithes—one for the Levites, one for the use of the temple and the feasts, and one for the poor of the land—which would have pushed the total to around 23.3 percent. Some understand the Old Testament tithe as a method of taxation to provide for the needs of the priests and Levites in the sacrificial system.

After the death of Jesus Christ fulfilled the Law, the New Testament nowhere commands, or even recommends, that Christians submit to a legalistic tithe system. The New Testament nowhere designates a percentage of income a person should set aside, but only says gifts should be “in keeping with income”

1 Corinthians 16:1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so I want you to do the same thing.

16:2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God has prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

Some in the Christian church have taken the 10 percent figure from the Old Testament tithe and applied it as a “recommended minimum” for Christians in their giving.

The New Testament talks about the importance and benefits of giving. We are to give as we are able. Sometimes that means giving more than 10 percent; sometimes that may mean giving less. It all depends on the ability of the Christian and the needs of the church. Every Christian should diligently pray and seek God’s wisdom in the matter of participating in tithing and/or how much to give

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of the father God Almighty, that gives to all men liberally, and doesn't make fun of anyone; and it will be given him.

1:6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that is wavering is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

1:7 For let not that man think that he will receive any thing of the Lord.

1:8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Above all, all tithes and offerings should be given with pure motives and an attitude of worship to God and service to the body of Christ. “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver”

2 Corinthians 9:6 But this I say, He which sows sparingly will reap also sparingly; and he which sows bountifully will reap also bountifully.

9:7 Every man according as he purposes in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loves a cheerful giver.

9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, would abound to every good work:

9:9 (As it is written, He have dispersed abroad; he has given to the poor: his righteousness remains for ever.

9:10 Now he that ministered seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousnesswink

9:11 Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causes through us thanksgiving to God.

9:12 For the administration of this service not only supplies the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God;

9:13 Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men;

9:14 And by their prayer for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you.

9:15 Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.

That's the bottom line of everything, "His unspeakable gift" the unexplainable. Only the Holy Spirit will help you.

There is no way it could be explained on the earth. The mighty love of the father God Almighty to man kind everywhere, by giving us his only begotten son that "who so ever" believe should not be condemned, but should have eternal life.

And so, fake pastors, fake preachers be warned and stop acting as if the apostles collected tithes from the early churches of Christ Jesus. I have shown you the scriptures you blind followers, it's all in the scriptures. Get the facts and stop acting as if there is no Holy Book of operations for Christ Jesus's believers.

This is the voice of heaven. Amen.

With the billions of tithepayers monies that are in the church today,how much has been used to organise christian shows that will keep us on the edge of our seats like BBNaija, NaijaIdols and the likes... Sick and mediocre pastors will come out with some stupid poverty alleviation programmes of 20k to start a small business while living in sheer opulence... Just a reminder... The highest Jesus rode was a donkey and instead of taking from the people,he fed them abi we don forget feeding of 5000 and 4000 persons in the bible or helping to make drinks available at the wedding in canaan... Our modern day pastors are just shenanigans and riffraffs in suits...how many church members run to them for help that they actually support...I no judge anyone o... Na just my opinion... Tired of a rich church with poor members...
