Quit plugging it in before you damage the circuitry inside your computer.
Get a replacement adapter.

i have a dell latitude d600 and it gives me the same problem . It doesn't charge it only uses direct current and whenever the lights (NEPA) go off the laptop goes off too . I have taking it to lots of repair guys (quacks i believe) and they couldn't do anything about it . I believe it has something to do with the circuitry but i don't know if the laptop circuitry can be fixed.

Is a problem with the battery and we need to verify that to be  100% certain.

Here's your diagnostics. Turn off Laptop back on again and pressing Delete or F2 key

until you get a blue screen that says Bios setu Utility. use your arrow key to go down

to power management and check the laptop battery status. Here's an illustration.

Good luck and thanks for enquiring.

Alternatively do a battery check in making sure
your battery is not defective.

Make sure you are using the right charger if not then
test with a different charger and see what happen.

Turn off the laptop back on again please and keep pressing
F10 or F1 until you see a blue screen that says Bios setup utility
make sure charger is plugged into laptop and into the mains
and leave it on the Blue screen for as long as you can.

If laptop shutdown on the  blue screen then is a problem with
the motherboard itself and need replacing, but does not worth it.

connect your charger and try wiggling it from left to right
from centre to right etc and see if we shutdown

if it does then is a problem with the power jack on your laptop
and need to be de-solder and re-solder back on again

Good luck and thanks for enquiring.

Having said that, could be a problem with the charger.

Try and swap test the charger wit a different one.
