There is "an opportunity" to persuade Moscow to stop its support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, agreed on Monday by British Prime Minister Theresa May and US President Donald Trump in a telephone conversation.

"The prime minister and the president agree that there is an opportunity to persuade Russia that its alliance with Assad is not a strategic interest," a May spokeswoman said.
The talk comes a week after the alleged chemical attack, attributed to the Syrian regime, which killed at least 87 civilians.
The United States responded by bombing an air base in Syria.
Britain "fully supports" the American bombings and the two countries have pressed Russia to abandon the Syrian regime. London canceled the visit its Foreign Minister, Boris Johnson, would make to Moscow.
