Ahead of the UEFA Champions League semi-final draw, UEFA.com dips into the history books to see how each of the remaining teams have fared against their potential last-four opponents – and finds that Atlético might want to avoid Real Madrid, Monaco could play Atlético for the first time, and there is precious little between Real Madrid and Juventus. Joe Walker, Madrid Are Monaco the team to avoid? Diario AS think so, if you're Real Madrid. "There's many reasons, but the most evident is the characteristics of Jardim's side: they're young, talented and have nothing to lose. All the pressure would be on Madrid, which is something they do not like. "Being the overwhelming favourites can be daunting. Besides, since Zidane took the reins, Madrid have been at their absolute best in big games and drawing Atlético or Juventus would leave the tie 50-50." http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/season=2017/draws/round=2000786/index.html |

More mature Real Madrid fans may still have nightmares about the Merengues' 2004 meeting with Monaco. The then nine-time European champions had one foot in the semi-finals after a 4-2 first-leg win – only for their former striker Fernando Morientes to come back to haunt them in the return, a 3-1 victory taking the Ligue 1 outfit through. A certain Mr Zidane was in the Madrid side. |

This is Atleti’s fifth European semi-final in the last eight years – and they won all the previous four (two apiece in the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League). |

The semi-finals will witness the 143rd and final European game at the Vicente Calderón. The stadium, which opened in 1966, is being demolished later this year and Atleti are moving 16km to the newly-built Metropolitano. The Calderón has seen 104 home wins, just 14 for the away team. |

Zinédine Zidane, Madrid coach I don't mind who we get, we'll see what happens. Last time we got Bayern and people said it wasn't time for the two of us to meet but that didn't turn out badly. |

Gianluigi Buffon, Juventus goalkeeper Maybe it’s better to meet Monaco or Real, who will spend significant energy in the fight for winning their respective league. They would rotate their players less than Atlético, who have a more defined position in the table and can manage themselves by resting players ahead of UEFA Champions League games. |

Gianluigi Buffon is one of only two players to make over 100 UEFA Champions League appearances but never lift the trophy. The other? Zlatan Ibrahimović. They're certainly not the only world-class players never to get their hands on 'Ol Big Ears (yet). How about these as a starter for ten? Michael Ballack, Patrick Vieira, Pavel Nedvěd, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Lilian Thuram, Hernán Crespo, Fabio Cannavaro, Francesco Totti, Ronaldo, Lothar Matthäus. |

In a poll conducted by the online version of Diario AS, two-thirds of Real Madrid fans say they would prefer to face Atlético in the final having beaten their neighbours to claim their Décima and Undécima. Atlético fans are split almost 50-50. Much like the club itself, they feel that should it be a final between the two sides, it is a positive - it means another Champions League final! |

Juventus have a very impressive record in European Cup semi-finals, winning eight out of 11 over the years. The last came two years ago when they beat Real Madrid 3-2 but both teams have changed quite a lot since then. |

Ominous signs for Real Madrid? Remarkably, no team has ever won back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles. Four holders have reached the following year’s final – most recently Manchester United in 2008/09 – but all finished runners-up. Madrid bowed out at the semi-final stage on their last three attempts ... |
Re: UEFA Champions League Semi Final Draw LIVE! by Sanchez01: 11:08am On Apr 21, 2017 |
Pre-draw thoughts: Joe Walker, Atlético reporter For Diego Simeone this is the big one. The prize he craves more than any other, having lost in two of the last three finals. Watching Atlético this season you can tell they are craving another shot at lifting European football's biggest prize and so far so good. They will be desperate to avoid another final with city rivals Real Madrid - so would not actually be that perturbed to see them come out of the hat today. Just not in the final... |
Re: UEFA Champions League Semi Final Draw LIVE! by Sanchez01: 11:10am On Apr 21, 2017 |
Pre-draw thoughts: Paolo Menicucci, Juventus' reporter Cristiano Ronaldo has resumed scoring at his usual standards for Real Madrid and Monaco have never stopped doing this season with youngster Mbappé and Radamel Falcao in scintillating form. Still, I believe that Atlético are the team to avoid for Juve in the semi-finals. Juve proved that they can quite easily stop the best attackers in the world by not conceding in 180 minutes of football against Barcelona. The Bianconeri enjoy facing teams who play open, attacking football but a team with a completely different mentality could give them problems. |
Re: UEFA Champions League Semi Final Draw LIVE! by Sanchez01: 11:11am On Apr 21, 2017 |
Pre-draw thoughts: Joe Walker, Real Madrid reporter This is their competition. The Meringues deal in silverware and they want to become the first side to ever retain the European Cup in its current form. Funnily enough, they will be keen to play Atlético in the final, given their recent hoodoo over them, however they might well be happy enough to see the Rojiblancos come out of the hat today. Monaco, after what happened at the quarter-final stage in 2004, and Juventus in 2015, both have inflicted recent scars on Zinédine Zidane's side. Mukina2 1 Like 1 Share |

Pre-draw thoughts: David Crossan, Monaco reporter Monaco are arguably the most exciting attack in Europe and a fearless, young side. They have no reason to fear anyone – they haven't so far. To ally insouciance with application is a rare gift and Monaco have it. Never has Franklin D Roosevelt's famous quote felt more apposite in football terms. |
