Most Muslims are peace-loving people. Only the militant Muslim extremists think that killing is a good way to achieve their goals.

Militant Islam experienced a revival in the 1970s and 1980s. Funding and weapons for the mujahideens (jihadists), were provided by the CIA during the Soviet-Afghan war in order to fight Communism. Unfortunately this gave more power and influence to previously marginal groups of Muslim extremists. The mujahideens eventually spawned the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

The founder of ISIS also had his start in the Soviet-Afghan war. Of course, the CIA is not solely to blame for Muslim extremism (Saudi Arabia is an even greater source of funds for terrorist groups), but it certainly played a role in shaping radical Islam to what it is today.

Also, it is important to remember that more wars have been fought, and quite possibly, more people killed, in the name of Christianity than Islam. Most religions, not just Islam, have the potential to turn violent when the wrong people gain undue influence.
