The attack starkly highlighted the struggle by the Afghan government and its international backers to defeat a Taliban insurgency that has gripped Afghanistan for more than a decade. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani visited the base on Saturday, and in a statement online, condemned the attack as "cowardly" and the work of "infidels".
