"Honestly son, I don't know."
"Jathniel,your face is red." Liam commented.
"Sorry, I tend to get reddish when I'm angry. My light skin causes that."
"I know. I'm trying to bring out a point. Is there any affection I'm missing out on?"
"Liam!" I tried to make him stop.
Jathniel laughed. "Not at all sir. She's just like my little sister's twin,that's all. Makes me see her as my sister too."
"Hmm ok then." Liam replied.
My mind was at work while they were talking. "I'll be right back." I excused myself to head to my room with my phone.
Once I got in, I closed the door behind me. I placed a call to Brian immediately. He picked on the second ring.
"Hello sis."
"Hello Brian. How are you?"
"I'm good. Get to the point Elizabeth. You never call me this early just to ask how I am."
"If that's what you want,fine. I want to to ask you a question and I need nothing but the truth Brian."
"I never lie."
"Have you sent Mille any text message recently about her mum's death?"
He scoffed. "Why would I do that? I'm still sane you know."
"Are you sure Brian?"
"Well, of course I'm sure. The girl probably told one of her friends something and they're using it to haunt her."
"She has very few friends Brian and she doesn't have a loose mouth."
He laughed. "Don't let Mille deceive you. Hope you're not suffering too much with her."
"Are you mad Brian? How dare you say such things? Listen to me and listen good, if I ever find out that you're behind this, I'll never forgive you for it."
"Alright sis,point taken. Can I go now?"
"One last thing. Mille told me about the nonsense you said when she spent the weekend with you. Stop doing that Brian,you want to break her heart?"
"Bye Liz." He disconnected the call.
"My God! Just help me please." I went back downstairs.
"I'll be leaving ma'am. Thanks for breakfast. If you need my help,please call me." Jathniel said.
"Thank you too dear. Remember,not a word of this to anyone."
"Sure ma."
"Bye uncle."
"Thank you for dropping by son." Liam replied and he left.
"Where did you go my queen?" Liam asked me.
"I needed to call Brian. I'm sure he has a hand in this though he's denying it."
"He's been acting strange. He doesn't pick my calls any longer." He replied.
"I don't know what to do hon. I hate seeing Mille suffer this way."
"Don't worry Liz. I believe she'll be fine. The experience will surely hurt her but she'll come out of it stronger and better."
I sighed.


Jamille

By the time I got to school,the first lecture was over. The next was by 11:30. I called Gloria and she said she was at the Fine Arts Studio with a friend. I went there to meet her. She was excited to see me. I guess she couldn't concentrate on whatever gist her lady friend was giving her anymore. She told the girl we had to go somewhere immediately,promising her she'd come back.
"Hey baby girl." She beamed.
"Gloria, your lying prowess is outstanding."
"That's me for you bae. So how are you?"
We had found a comfortable spot under a tree to settle down.
"I'm OK today. Thanks."
"So what really happened yesterday?"
Telling her would be too long a story so I opted for a lie instead. I had never lied to her before but like they say,there's always a first time to everything.
"I just missed my mum really bad yesterday and I needed my aunt's shoulder to cry on. I'm sorry I got you worried."
"Oh thank God."
"Yeah, your brother came to the house this morning."
"I know. Why didn't you say Niel instead?" She laughed. I totally ignored the comment.
"How'd you get this bruise on your cheek?"
"Oh that. I got it yesterday. My bro and I had an accident."
"What?! How come he didn't say so?"
"September fool. That was a joke,relax bae."
"You got me scared Gloria."
"Sorry dear. I actually bumped into something last night at home when the generator was turned off."
"Sorry about that."
"Nah, it's OK. Not even painful."
We talked about a few more things just to while away time before the next class. Going to class was a lot worse than I imagined. My mind kept straying throughout the class. I went for all my classes that day but it was all a waste.
A similar text message was sent again before I went back to my apartment.
The text messages kept pouring in for two full weeks. Within those two weeks, I had become a shadow of myself. I didn't say a word of what was happening to Kara,Rachel or Jason.
In Jason's case, I didn't want him to worry about me but as for Kara and Rachel, I was afraid of them. My instincts told me they had a hand in it,if not directly,then indirectly.
Gloria didn't understand why I was getting lean. I attributed it to stress. Niel,mum and daddy Liam were the only ones who knew and understood my predicament. They did everything within their power to help me. I felt a lot of pity for them. They were all having a hard time just because of me. The feeling I had when mum died came crawling in again with greater force. There was only one sentence I could use to describe myself - I was a bundle of trouble.

Two weeks later.

It was a hot Friday evening. Gloria had already gone to her house to spend the weekend. Niel offered to take me home as had been his custom over the past two weeks.
Kara and Rachel called me earlier that they were at home.
We were chatting as he drove the long distance from school back to my house.
"Mille?" He called me.
"Yeah. What is it?"
"I think you're too lean. It's been two weeks Mille. Aunt and Gloria told me you barely eat twice in one day. I'm getting worried."
"Jason,I'm fine."
"Jason?" He raised his brows up.
"Oh sorry. I was thinking about Jason."
"You guys are the tightest twins I've ever known."
I laughed. "I guess you could say so. So how'd your day roll?"
"It went well. I spent more than half of it with Pastor Don." He replied.
"What were you doing with him?"
"He's my uncle. My late father's brother. Some older people like us still need mentors you know."
"Oh I see. I would have never guessed he was your uncle."
"Yeah. Not many people know. I think he wanted to marry my mum but my dad was a sharper guy." He began laughing and I joined him.
"Both of them are still quite close anyway." He continued.
"You have an interesting family Niel."
"Yeah. You do too."
"Only to an extent. My father behaves like he hates me sometimes."
"Come off it Mille. Who would have you and hate you?"
I smiled.
"I've caught you today."
"What is it?" I was confused.
"I've seen the corner smile that Rachel always teases you about."
"You're sick o." I punched his arm.
"If you do nonsense here,two of us will die together."
I laughed hard. "You'll die alone my dear."
"Wait and see na." He branched a supermarket to get ice cream for Kara and Rachel.
"Which flavour should I get for them?"
"Strawberry. They love it." I replied.
"And what about you?" He opened the refrigerator to remove the plates of ice cream.
"Niel, how many times will I tell you I hate ice cream?"
"I know madam. I was just pulling your legs." We walked to the counter together.
A dark lady, probably in her early thirties whom I noticed had been watching us since we entered the supermarket walked up to him and tapped him on the shoulder.
"Jathniel! What a pleasant surprise. How have you been?" She hugged him
"Hey Theresa. I'm OK. What about you? What's popping?"
"I'm just good. I came back to the country last week. I've decided to come stay in Nigeria."
"Wow! That's great news. By the way, meet my best friend,Jamille. Jamille this is my family friend,Theresa."
"Nice to meet you Jamille."
"Nice to meet you too Theresa."
The attendant at the counter had already packaged the ice cream. I got money from my purse and paid for it since Niel was so engrossed in his conversation and he handed me the bag.
"Niel, I'll be in the car." I said to him.
"Oh no. Jathniel don't keep your girlfriend waiting. Here's my card. Call me OK?"
"Theresa,I said she's my best friend not girl friend." He was smiling.
"Whatever." She rolled her eyes. "I'll see you guys around. Jamille sorry for taking his time."
"Nah,it's no bother. Bye." I replied.
"Bye love." She went back to her shopping.
"Let's go Jamille." He held my hand.
"You won't leave me before the next person will call me your wife."
He laughed as he opened the car door for me before turning to his side.
"Mille,you're funny."
"OK na. Do fast and marry o. I must approve of the woman first sha."
"You will dear, you will. Trust me."
We continued on the journey home. After much talking, I started dozing off. He woke me up when we got to the house.
Mum and dad were in the sit-out as usual. We greeted them. I heard raised voices inside.
"Mum,who's quarrelling inside?"
"It's Kara and Philip o. I'm not saying a word. Let them kill themselves."
"The argument is sweet sef. Just listen to them." Dad laughed.
I dashed inside. Rachel was sitting on the stairs watching the movie Kara and Philip were acting.
"You're an idiot Philip."
"Same to you Kara. You're so unbelievable. Must you attack my every action?"
"Of course I must." Kara retorted.
"Last time I promised I'll teach you a lesson." They obviously didn't notice our presence.
"Teach me na. I'm ready to learn."
"Kara,you just have luck, that's all. No matter how hard I try,I can't get to you. Thank your God."
Kara clapped her hands. "See this mumu o. I'm tired of arguing with you this hippo. When you're done,get out of my living room." She walked towards the stairs in anger.
"Fine Kara,fine. Next time,I'll do something worse than dealing with Jamille just to get you hurt. It seems that one didn't get to your stupid head."
I fainted.
