Petroleum refining processes are the chemical engineering processes and other facilities used in petroleum refineries (also referred to as oil refineries) to transform crude oil into useful products such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), gasoline or petrol, kerosene, jet fuel, diesel oil and fuel oils.
A single barrel of crude oil can produces the following components, which are listed by percent of the barrel they constitute.
42% Gasoline
22% Diesel
9% Jet Fuel
5% Fuel Oil
4% Liquefied Petroleum Gases
18% Other products

The Process
The process begins by drilling into the reservoir rocks the ground and extracting the crude oil; once extracted it is sent to one of the many refineries around the world.
In these refineries the crude oil is pumped through pipes into the fractional distillation tower. 

Distillation i.e Seperation
The tower separates the crude oil by heating it through a boiler, and changing its state to a gas.
This gas is passed through a distillation column that becomes cooler with height. When certain gases reach the temperature that is the distinct temperature below the compounds boiling point, they condense into a liquid.
These liquids are then separated into their own distilling column at the various heights.

Operators control the refining processes using hi-tech computers located in control centers situated throughout the refinery.

Crude oil can be separated into seven different main distilling columns;
Residue (at 1050°F or higher)
Fuel Oil (at 650°F to 1050°F)
Diesel Oil (at 450°F to 650°F)
Kerosene (at 350°F to 450°F)
Naphtha (at 185°F to 350°F)
Gasoline (at 85°F to 185°F)
Butane, propane and lighter products (at 85° F or lower).

Separation of Compounds
The tower separates the compounds by heating up the mixture in the boiler; this breaks the mixtures bonds changing its state to a gas.
As the gas passes through to the distillation column, it comes in contact with different temperatures.
When the gas passes through the cool temperature just below the boiling point of the certain compound, it condenses to liquid.
This liquid is then separated into the distilling column at the height at which only the compound that changes into a liquid at this temperature will go into.
This separates the pure compounds into the different fractions of the tower.

Other Processes To Get More Of Desired Products

Cracking
Is the process whereby middle distillate, gas oil and residuum into primarily gasoline, jet and diesel fuels are converted by using a series of processing plants that literally “crack” large, heavy molecules into smaller, lighter ones.

Treating (Removing Impurities)
The products from the Crude Units and the feeds to other units contain some natural impurities, such as sulfur and nitrogen. Using a process called hydrotreating (a milder version of hydrocracking), these impurities are removed to reduce air pollution when our fuels are used.

Reforming
Much of the gasoline that comes from the Crude Units or from the Cracking Units does not have enough octane to burn well in cars.

The gasoline process streams in the refinery that have a fairly low octane rating are sent to a Reforming Unit where their octane levels are boosted.
ln the reforming process, hydrocarbon molecules are “reformed” into high octane gasoline components.

Quality Control
In the refinery’s modernly-equipped Laboratory, chemists and technicians conduct quality assurance tests on all finished products, including checking gasoline for proper octane rating.
