Atheist in the house, do you make your believes known openly and publicly asides on social media or anonymous forum? If no, Why? If yes? How do you cope with being ostracized? cc: seun 1 Like 1 Share |

hopefulLandlord:It's a nice thread advising freethinkers to be outspoken no matter the odds. Now, i want to know how outspoken freethinkers are out there and how they cope with being ostracized. This is because i tend not to meet any in real life except on nairaland. 1 Like |

When someone asks me, what is your religion or if we are discussing things related to religion, I will tell them. I'm an Ethiopian and people here are very religious, but I won't face that much criticism. Both my parents are non-believers. 2 Likes |

chemystery:Yes, my father was Atheist(he died last year) and my mother is also Atheist. There is criticism, like why?, but there isn't much. May be it's because, I hadn't exposed it to lots of people. 1 Like 1 Share |

I reside in the North and been outspoken about my atheistic nature as will all know could cost me a lot.... Anyways, I partially do reveal my disbelief to those very close to and seriously, they have a rethink about their religious stand whenever we engage into intelligent arguments... Been outspoken as an atheist publicly in Nigeria is synonymous to been any/both of the followings - gay, insane person, agent of devil, the devil himself, foolish etc 5 Likes |

I ignore the questions about my religious affiliation. I only disclose my agnostic position to close friends who I'm sure will not freak out. Eventually, most of my friends turn atheist after years of lengthy discussions. Sometimes I engage strangers who go about with the bible preaching. They either run scared. Or try to change me with quotes from passages in the bible which I don't believe in the first place. How ironic... |

chemystery: Yes I do but unlike johnnydon22 I get different reactions My family keep their distance, mostly because they are deeply indoctrinated But whenever I can I like to bring up the discussion of religion Unfortunately, most people are overwhelmed by fear of hell and the wrath of god and also ignorance of the history of their religion to engage in meaningful debates Above all I care less. Afterall, who dem epp? |

I used to have a don't ask don't tell policy as I was more focused on business, but now religion is one of my favorite topics to talk about. I'm tired of people assuming that I'm a Christian and then being 'disappointed' on learning the truth. I want everybody I meet to already know. 12 Likes 3 Shares |

Seun: Na wa o, oga seun, don't you think this will affect your business dealings? Judging from my own side, I am open to telling people i don't go to church, and that's the most i can say. Most of them start keeping distance from me (especially the female folks). I don't even know how i can start telling people i don't believe in god. Dem fit even shoot me 1 Like |

Seun: So, please, are you irreligious or godless? |
Re: To The Atheist In The House by kevoh(m): 7:35am On May 05, 2017 |
chemystery:I don't have a yes or No answer. Over time I have learnt to just let my irreligious views and discussions define the perception you have of me. Seems atheism is a strong word for the average religious Nigerian, some don't even know the meaning of the word so I don't really bother announcing myself as one. I rarely go about proselytizing like the average Christian does. If you have your discussions with me and start doubting your religion that one is your Own Cup of tea. 1 Like |

MrPresident1: Very important question . Most people mistake being irreligious for being godless . Even the godless can be religious https://www.nairaland.com/3500235/must-read-god-without-religion 1 Like 1 Share |

Seun: Really? By which of the definitions below are WE all, according to you, godless? 1. not recognizing or obeying God. "a godless country" synonyms: atheistic, unbelieving, agnostic, skeptical, heretical, faithless, irreligious, ungodly, unholy, impious, profane; More infidel, heathen, idolatrous, pagan; satanic, devilish "a godless society" antonyms: religious 2. without a god. "humanity coming to terms with a godless world" 3. profane; wicked. synonyms: immoral, wicked, sinful, wrong, evil, bad, iniquitous, corrupt; More Seun: We have no divine arms to lean on yet we have each other? Yet we are godless? Very very interesting. When people provide their arms and shoulders for others to lean on, that is divine, and that is love, and that is God. You my friend are only irreligious, you are not godless! Your godlessness begins on the day you withdraw your shoulder from your fellow human being. |
