SirVintageCock: I think it is expected in this part of the world where some if not all medical practitioners don't consider the medical history of patients before administering drugs to them. 1 Like |

This is sad. I pray that this boy get healed in Jesus name,Amen. There is very little education on Drug reaction in this country. Last month my baby took erythromycin and i noticed a real change in the colour of her skin from the first day of taking that drug but i ignored it. When i later discussed with a Pharmacist, she told me how dangerous that can be. A reaction no matter how small should be reported and taken serious. This boy's school and their so called school clinic did not try at all. Their attitude to this boy's parent is very bad. Typical Nigerian poor/non customer service attitude. 2 Likes |

This is a case of Stevens - Johnson syndrome . It occurs in patients who react to sulphonamides. Fansidar contains sulphur. Most patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome are treated symptomatically. In principle, the symptomatic treatment of patients with this disorder does not differ from the therapy applied to patients with extensive burns. Patients should be treated with special attention to airway and hemodynamic stability, fluid status, wound/burn care, and pain control. Therapy for Stevens-Johnson syndrome proceeds as follows: Withdrawal of any agent suspected of causing the condition is critically important Oral lesions are managed with mouthwashes; topical anesthetics are useful in reducing pain and allowing the patient to take in fluids Areas of denuded skin must be covered with compresses of saline or Burow solution Tetanus prophylaxis must be addressed Extensive debridement of nonviable epidermis followed by immediate cover with biologic dressings is among the recommended treatments. 3 Likes |

Just like CHLOROQUINE itches random people, Sulfur drugs can trigger Steven Johnson's reaction randomly too. But the koko be say expedient responses may not have been initiated vigorously by the nurse. Wishing him a quick recovery 2 Likes |

Brief analysis 1.The Nurse may be to blame in that she did not find out about any allergies the student exhibits. Once you are beginning the treatment of any patient....FIND OUT ABOUT ALLERGIES. 2.Then again, the nurse probably did her job, and asked about allergies.....and the lad probably did not know of any allergies up to that point...because he had never reacted to sulfur containing drugs before that event..OR ...he had never ever had sulfur drugs in his life (possible). (Yes....allergies can be very very strange things. The body might suddenly decide to react to something that it was tolerating well enough before). All in all....more investigations is needed before we can make a pronouncement....and blame or praise or caution or let off the nurse. |

SirVintageCock: True, but the nurse that administered should have acted immediately she notice the boy was reacting to whatever she gave him.. A quick shot of adrenaline might have helped the boy, .. wish him well 2 Likes |

9jakohai:Oshey. This is actually true. But then hasn't the minister of health banned antimalarials monotherapy? Why didn't the nurse stick to artemether/lumefantrine which has lower incidence of side effects? And for that he or she may be held liable 2 Likes |

Lifezhead: You are absolutely right. The kid looks like he had stevens johnson syndrome which can be caused by a lot of medicines. I wonder how Sahara and the investigators concluded that the kid got the wrong medication. SJS is life threatening. Thank goodness he is alive. 1 Like |
