The unwarranted increase in fees in unn has resulted in a riot which saw the destruction of many properties including the VC's house. Imagine an increment of acceptance fee from #5000 to #25000, convocation fee from #6000 to #40000 and planning to raise hostel accomodation from #9000 to #30000. The school fee is yet to be released.pleee, ase federal government come to our aid. |

This is not a good story of UNN at this point in time. I'm quite happy on how the lions & lionesses hve taken up this challenge, though it may quite cripple schl activities at the moment. But I implore the stand they took on this issue, hopefully smthing wl come out of it. Nw the man will definitely know that he is playing in lion's den. |

The increases are so unfair? What were the justification for making such drastic increase in this period of economic meltdown with so many bread winners losing their jobs. I heard the VC already sent his daughter away to America. The Government had beta do something about this, and suprisingly it is not yet in any of the national television (poor coverage of the media houses). Na wa for this country oh!! |

Latest development; students are told to vacate the hostels on or before 7:00pm today. Now tell me where they want these people to go? Those travelling far distance, will they sleep at the park? |

See yarn from Bartho Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Bartho Okolo, has blamed Saturday demonstration by the students of the institution over rumoured hike in fees which turned violent, on those he described as disgruntled elements who failed in their bid to clinch the office of the vice chancellor. Prof Okolo, in an exclusive interview with Daily Sun, said his administration which set out to upgrade the institution to world class and to make the environment conducive for both learning and teaching is almost realising this dream at the time the students were instigated to carry out the demonstration. He regretted that the students were instigated to act on baseless rumour by a few mischief makers in the institution, pointing out that increase in fees is not the prerogative of the vice chancellor as there are laid down procedures for it which the students’ union knows. The UNN VC, who was sober apparently because of what happened in his institution, also decried the inability of the police to rise to nip the demonstration in the bud as he had alerted the Area Command, advising them to deploy men to the campus to forestall the action. He, therefore, advised his students to always cross- check any information given to them as it is the resolve of his administration to make life better for them on campus. Property worth millions of naira were destroyed last Saturday by the UNN students who said they were protesting various hikes in fees, but the vice chancellor said the claims were unfounded, insisting that the university had never planned to increase fees. Excerpts: What caused the demonstration What I heard myself was that…because there was never a dispute between the administration and the students, we have had very cordial relationship with our union. What I got even before the demonstration from the students’ union president and their people was that some people were instigating the students to demonstrate and to cause a disorderly environment, that the university will increase fees, which I told the students’ union government that there was no evidence on that, that there was nothing whatsoever to show that because both the university administration, the principal officers, nobody has ever thought about increment, it has not been discussed not to talk of it being presented anywhere, it was just a rumour that is unfounded and the students’ union assured me that they were going to go round to educate the students that this was an unfounded rumour. The rumour of hike in accommodation fees We have not discussed anything in this regard at all and I remember telling the students that we have a big plan for the university. I have been there for 24 years and my children have passed through that university. They don’t have toilets; you can go there and see things for yourself, the students defecate in paper bags and that situation saddened all of us. Again, most of the roofs are leaking and we decided to rehabilitate the environment for the students; that is the most painful thing about this demonstration because it came at a time the university has invested so much resources and time in trying to make the students comfortable and which the students appreciated; and have been calling in to say that they are so happy with this administration for what they are doing for them. We are re-roofing all the hostels at the same time, cleaning and re-building all the toilets at the same time and the entire environment of the students. We are building the students centre that has not been done for a very long time and they are supposed to be completed this January just to make sure that we create appropriate teaching and learning environment for the students. And we have been doing all these without asking them for anything and even if you have to ask for an increase, you need to show the people why you have to do the increment. And right from the time I took over I have been discussing with the students’ union that if there is any reason for us to increase anything, I will call you, anything that concerns you, I will call you and we will sit down to discuss it and I will tell you what we are doing and we will collectively decide whether it is right or not; that is my belief, that is what I think should be done so that we will not take actions with impunity and that is what we have been doing. And that will tell you that the demonstration was tele- guided by a few misguided elements in the university, some university staff and we know them. Most of them were arrested yesterday with the cult members they were organizing this thing with in a hotel at Nsukka. Inability to nip the demonstration in the bud We tried to do that. Even a day before the demonstration, I called the police area commander and told him that this was coming and that he should mobilize about 200 of his men to secure the university that the presence of security operatives will very likely dispel the students and thereby prevent the action. So, I didn’t know why they didn’t do that, probably they don’t have enough resources or enough men; I don’t really know, but I personally called the area commander to inform him and before 5:30 a.m. that morning, before the students started mobilizing, I called him again and also called the mobile police commander, I called all of them and told them. When the students were approaching my house and my daughter was inside my house I called them and told them that my children were in the house, but I don’t know why they did not do anything. Extent of damage The estimate has not been done, but I understand that a lot of things were damaged and unfortunately most of the things are the good things we are putting in place to make the university a better place for the students. Those behind the mayhem They are not just my colleagues or people I lead, they are just a few disgruntled elements who felt that they contested the vice-chancellorship with me and they vowed that if they can’t get this thing by examination, they can get it by force; because we were subjected to a very rigorous examination and I was chosen after the examination. So, the important thing is that they are known and they should come to say why they did what they did. Most of them have done things that are very inimical to the university and maybe this is a way they think that if they remove Bartho Okolo by instigating the students it will be covered up. Not all of them, just two of them and because they are greedy people who want to reap where they did not sow. My determination to re- build UNN I am determined, you know my record and you can go and investigate further, I have a track record of delivering on my mandate, I have good track record of very positive and constructive service and I am sure that it is this spirit that they want to kill; I will not allow them to do that; it is demoralizing actually, but I will not allow them because that university will be the first university in Nigeria and Africa. We are determined to upgrade that university to an enviable height. Pattern of increasing fees It is not the vice chancellor’s prerogative, it is actually the council’s prerogative. What the vice chancellor will do is to bring his management and the central officers and decide on fees when the time comes and then they will send the proposal to the council and the council will approve this; that is how it is done. So there has not been any discussion on fees, I can tell you there is absolutely no time we have discussed fees at any level in that university. You can go yourself to the school and interview the principal officers, the management and the council members and find out yourself whether any of such things have been discussed, the minutes of all these things are there, see whether any of these are there. And I have told the students’ union and they know all that; so that will tell you that the demonstration was something that was done to distract the students and to create an unruly environment, to create the impression that the vice chancellor is not doing well. My advice to the students I will want to tell my students that as undergraduate students, you people are mature students. If you qualify to enter into a university, you will be in the university without your parents, without anybody standing at your back, nobody pushing you to get up, you get up by yourself and go for your lectures. So, we advise them as mature people, before you take action confirm that what you have heard is the truth, do not act on rumours. And they should be responsible people, even if the rumour was true the appropriate thing to do was to go and ask the administrators; is this thing true? Then you dialogue and negotiate, you don’t have to take laws into your hands, the best thing is not to destroy public property. All these property they have now destroyed, they are going to pay for them, their parents are going to pay for them, so we advise them to be responsible people because any person in the university is assumed to be a responsible person and not one who behaves like a tout. |

The best thing that will happen to UNN is for EFCC to come get Professor Bartholomew Okolo arrested, he is the most corrupt and deceitful Vice Chancellor in the country . Almost 40,000 students had already paid N25,000 acceptance fees which amount to over 1Billion naira, unfortunately the receipt bears N2,000 He started his administration by demolishing all the eating places and business centers inside the school premises, without providing alternative places and no one talked. He forced 40,000 student to buy shopping forms at the rate of 10,000 which amounted to over FOUR HUNDRED MILLION NAIRA that went to his personal purse, Next he went ahead and increase acceptance fee from 6000 to 25000 and made over N1billion. While thousands of students were paying 25,000 naira in the bank,2000 receipt were given to them. Then on the University website fresh undergraduates were billed to pay N85,000 excluding sundry fess, which altogether amounts to N125,000. Convocation fees from N4,000 to N40,000(900% increase) and then school fees for old student was N80,000. All this information were in University Website befor the demonstration began, after the demonstration it all disappeared from the website. There were two fronts in the crisis. The first involved the secondary students of the institution who were protesting arbitrary fee hike by their school from N30,000 to N60,000, because demanded the school should provide N90millions within two days. Letters reportedly signed by the principal, Mrs. Ebele Erojikwe and issued to the students earlier on Wednesday sparked off the violent demonstration on Thursday. On Friday when student union government confronted him on the matter, he refused to address them, that why the Union mobilize students for the demonstrations. THE PROFILE OF THE VICE CHANCELLOR 1) He was the Chairman of NUGA committee during Nebo's regime. He ended up leaving most Sport facilities uncompleted, looting the remaining money. Billions of Naira went into his personal purse 2) When he assumed office started demolishing classrooms, restaurants and Computer Centres in the campus with no compensation to the owners, providing no single alternative for stranded students. No place to eat nor type documents. 3)He is arrantly arrogant, snubbing meetings with the SUG severally abusing his fellow professors 5) using SSS, POLICE,,MOPOLS and SOLDIERS to intimidate and harass lecturers and students. 6. Award contract without following the school administration process 7) The only VC in the history of UNN that openly harass the female students sexually. THE UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA STUDENTS WANT LEADERS OF THOUGHT IN THE COUNTRY TO ASK THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: (1) What happened to the 1Billion naira realized from acceptance fees (2)Where is the FOUR HUNDRED MILION NAIRA REALIZED FROM shopping forms sold to 40,000 students at the sum of N10,000 each? (3)Would the thousand of students who paid the acceptance fee of N25,000 each be refunded, since he is denying of any increase? (4) Why Would students be issued N2,000 receipt after paying N25,0000? (5)Would the thousand of students who paid the acceptance fee of N25,000 each be refunded, since he is denying of any increase? (6) what about those who don’t have 25,000 to pay for the newly increased acceptance fees, would they be allowed to pay N2,000 (7)Why is the new VC denying that he did not plan for any increase when he already made billions of Naira from the increase? Why has the New VC failed to address students since he assumed office? How much more money does he want to make before he allows peace to rain in UNN? What is the school council and senate doing, if they have not been bribed? Why do we have such people as leaders in the high institutions? The answers to the above questions will prove that the VC is not morally and academically fit to govern our University? What a criminal What a crook What is EFCC waiting for? |

UNN SAGA! Batho must not use d freakish wireless as a guise to flare school fees amid d present plight of UNN students. it is a poorly crafted mesure, knowing full well that more than 60% of UNN students has no laptops; the network is limited to a small area; there is regular power outage and not more than 20 laptop charging ports around the school. we cannot be squeezed into their mould, neither shud we keep silent. D legacy layed by d defunct SUG (UNN) and fundermentalist accroos other universities energise us. Let every student of UNN avail his/her self the present riot. This time Batho nd his cohorts would meet a faceless and defiant elites. It would b a return to status-quo or nothing! Together we stand!!! ALUTA CONTINUA!!! |
Re: The Sleeping Lion Awaken. Unn Riot by anscestors: 5:25pm On Oct 08, 2012 |
UNN students must come together to fight this evil called Batho Okolo. y shud he push the school fees that high. If he is not contained now, i assure everyone - the school fees wud soon rise to 100,000 niara; for he is a raving maniac |

I refuse to understand why some people are so cruel and selfish. Bartho or whatever his name is, should be handed over to EFCC. He is a criminal and a rogue.Where and where can one browse in the Campuses. Even if the students are to pay for internent access, would one spend as much as N 12,000 for browins only. Its really outrageous and inhuman to add such amount to the school fees. It makes no sense at all, instead it presents Bartho and his cohorts as bandits and BIG FOOLS! |
