Barcelona have appointed former Athletico Bilbao boss Ernesto Valverde as a replacement for Luis Enrique.

Barcelona confirmed his appointed via a statement, the 53 year old has signed a two-year deal with the club.

The former Barcelona player has won the Spanish Super Copa with Bilbao, defeating Barcelona in the final in 2015.

His predecessor Luis Enrique won nine trophies with Barcelona in his three year stay with the club, Barcelona will hope he can do better and secure the La Liga title next season.

The club President Josep Bartomeu said : "He is very excited and very happy, that it's a great challenge to come in as the head coach of Barcelona.

"He loves youth football and he has a special style, similar to what we play at Barca. He has a philosophy similar to Barca's and trains the way we like to train."
