HOW TO DEAL WITH AGING PROCESS
As you age, it is important to think about not only how long you will live, but how well you will live. The following strategies can help you maintain and perhaps even enhance your quality of life as you age.
1. Don’t smoke: smoking contributes to heart disease, stroke, and it increases the risk of many cancers.
2. Build physical and mental activities into your everyday life. Physical activity is good for the body and the mind. Exercise (such as
Gardening or Housekeeping) helps keep your bones and heart healthy and your weight in check.
3. Eat a healthy diet rich in whole grains, vegetables and fruits. Healthy diets protect against many disease.
4. Challenge your mind: some evidence suggests that reading, doing crossword puzzles, engaging in thought-provoking conversations, can
help keep your mind sharp.
5. Build a strong social network: as you get older, it’s important to maintain close and rewarding ties with family and friends. Some studies
suggest that social ties might help ward off Dementia (a serious medical disorder caused by brain disease or injury that affects the
ability to think, remember and behave normally) and keep you mentally sharp.
6. Protect your sight, hearing, and general health by following preventive care guidelines.
7. Floss (to clean between your teeth), brush and see a dentist regularly.

Did You Know…

That the slower response times of older adults to “cold turkey” questioning (asking questions without introduction to a memory) comes from the huge amount of data and information they are paging through in their brains? If you ask your questions in a multiple choice way, (“Is the dress red, pink or green?” or “Was your coffee hot or cold ?”) you will get a faster response time and your older adult will feel more confident in their answer. Have patience: older and much-older adults are quite busy checking their databases!
