What, Really, Is Wrong With Nigerian Pentecostalism? A Brief Look At William Kumuyi And His Deeper Life Bible Church

1Jn 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abides in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teaches you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, says the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, says the LORD:
Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, says the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, says the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Heb 8:8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
Heb 8:9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, says the Lord.
Heb 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
Heb 8:11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
Heb 8:12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
Heb 8:13 In that he says, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decays and waxes old is ready to vanish away.

Joh 6:45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

Isa 54:13 And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.

Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Eze 36:25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.
Eze 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
Eze 36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

------------------
My prayer for everyone that comes across this post is that God will have mercy on you. I pray you will see this post for what it really is: an attempt to make you examine, by the Spirit of the Lord Jesus Christ, what you hold in your hands: is it a faith sanctioned by God’s Spirit or a set of futile attempts at pleasing God?

The Human Heart And The True Christian Faith

Not many people realize that the ‘Christianity’ of William Kumuyi and that of David Oyedepo are essentially the same. They both originate from the same source and preach virtually the same teachings: the little differences are in the approach. They both preach the ‘gospel’ of what you must do to procure things from God. They both originate from Azusa Street and teach essentially a gospel of works: you must do this, you must do that to earn the favour of God. Mr Kumuyi emphasizes the external: what dress you must wear, how you must walk, what you must never eat or drink and what speech mannerism you must adopt. Mr Oyedepo speaks about how important your observance of good time and asset management principles are to the success of your life. To him, you must never forget to speak your success, health and wealth into existence otherwise you won’t get any: there is really no God anywhere infinitely powerful and good looking after your well-being! You must use your mouth to pull the good into yourself: you must use the same mouth to ward off evil!

While sprinkling in the name of Jesus, Mr Kumuyi’s main grouse is your appearance: if you are neat, tidy, genteel and you do no obvious sins, you are on your way to heaven! You must do all these while never failing to remind your neighbours how differently holy you are from them.

A Gospel Of Grace?

Grace, what grace? Who needs grace when you can do it yourself! The Deeper Christian Life Ministry does not preach the gospel of grace. Its is on how you conduct yourself. As Isaiah would put it, it is about rules upon rules: a little here; a little there: Isa 28:10 “For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

Isa 28:11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
Isa 28:12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
Isa 28:13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken”.

Mr William Kumuyi -and the Deeper Life Bible Church - does not preach the gospel of FAITH IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. He preaches the gospel of works: we would get to heaven if we faithfully observe some rules delicately laid out by the ‘man of God’! As a true derivative of Azusa Street fake Pentecostal Holiness Movement, the physical is the thing. The Deeper Life is unaware of the centrality God gives the heart of man and its incurable evil in true Christian theology. When last did you hear Mr Kumuyi truthfully preach on Jeremiah 17:9 or the various other passages featured in this post? How do you expect him to justify his teachings while clearly quoting the Lord Jesus Christ in John 14:26 :”But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you and John 6:45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me”? What does he say on 1 John 2:27 and Hebrews 8:8-13 while teaching his followers the intricate dimensions of the turban their females must wear? By disregarding the centrality of the heart of man and its incurable evil, Mr Kumuyi minimizes the importance of the Work of the Messiah. This leads him to the error of thinking the problem of man is mere ignorance. According to this view, men only need to spend enough time under the tutelage of good mentors or ‘men of God’.

The Deeper Life And The NAR

You begin to get the clue the Deeper Christian Life Ministry is an intrinsic arm of the Azusa Street heresy by its belief in the New Apostolic Reformation. Check its website and see the prominence it gives the authority of the late fake ‘Chairman’ of the College of New Apostles, Peter C Wagner.

What is the New Apostolic Reformation about? The era of Peter, John, Matthew, Paul and their companions is gone: there is now a new set of Apostles on the loose, and, of course, with a new set of divine revelations not necessarily confirmable by looking into the ‘old, archaic ’ writings in the Bible! Obviously to the new ‘Apostles’, the Revelation 22:18-19 warnings against adding to, or deleting from, the concluded Bible does not apply! The teachings of the doctrines of the NAR by the Deeper Christian Life Ministry is a conclusive proof of the identity of the spirit behind Mr Kumuyi’s work: a good tree does not bear a poisonous fruit.

A Short-Hand Code

Apart from the beliefs that the Bible is not comprehensive enough or too dated for life in the modern time(ever heard of the so-called, 'divine revelation knowledge' or 'word of knowledge'?), one other short-hand code we can safely use for churches and ministries that come from Azusa Street is the unbiblical doctrine that all truly born again people must have another ‘baptism of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues’. Readers will discover this is one other doctrine that connects such seemingly disparate ministers as Kenneth Hagin, Chris Oyakhilome, Fred Price, Kenneth Copeland, Charles Capps, David Oyedepo, Enock Adeboye and William Kumuyi. You will discover this connection between Charles Parham’s ‘Apostolic Faith’ and its daughter ‘churches’ and ministries. We have published quite a few materials on the blatantly satanic nature and practices of this belief to warrant a repeat here. We can safely state that everyone should be on guard once he reads or hears this short-hand code in a church or ministry: you cannot affirm and preach things the Bible forbids without having problems with your ideas of God, Sin and Redemption, and, consequently, the Person and Work of the Holy Spirit.

The Organization And The Goal

At times one good way to gauge the goal of an organization is to look at the structure of the body itself. The Nigerian Pentecostal ministries all generally have this in common: their main goal is the financial well-being of their biological families. Is it not intriguing to you that more than four decades after the formation of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, no other name apart from Kumuyi is ever published by the group? That is to say after more than 40 years of tutorship, no one in the group has been found good enough to be trusted to teach or lead or exercise any serious clout in the management of the ‘Christian’ body if his last name is not Kumuyi. Can you imagine Peter or John naming their wives and children the main, and possibly the only, registered trustees in their ministries?

The New Testament has clearly defined structure of the leadership and management of a true Christian body. Part of this is found in Mat 23:8-10 “But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
Mat 23:9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
Mat 23:10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ”.

The unwillingness or inability of Mr Kumuyi to follow this simple guideline instead of his preference for the Catholic Pope model should be a pointer to his antecedents, beliefs and goals. And just as some medieval popes installed their offspring as their successors, he is grooming his sons to take over the leadership of the ministry upon his death. And, why not? Godliness and righteousness run in their blue blood!

The Percentage of Good, The Percentage of Poison

Are we saying the Nigerian Pentecostal Movement and the Deeper Christian Life Ministry in particular have not done some good in the society? Not really. The issue is the percentage of poison that kills. In the spiritual sphere that percentage is very small indeed, if the distortion of the nature of the heart of man and the minimization of the Work of the Messiah can ever be deemed small.

The Offence Of The Gospel

You know what the Bible calls the offence of the gospel? It is that there is nothing we can do by ourselves to impress God and earn His mercies. We can never be good enough to earn His favour or do His Will by ourselves. We cannot be knowledgeable or sacrificial enough. If we could, he would not have needed to come down and pay for our sins. Please go back to the passages quoted at the start of this article. They are all about God forgiving us of our sins, changing our hearts, writing His laws in our minds, giving us the fear of Himself, guiding our lives. Those are not dependent on how erudite we are or how many hours we have spent in a school learning righteousness. They do not depend on the use of our mouths to call in the good or ward off the evil from us. They depend only on our confidence in the completed Work of the Saviour.

For our proud and deceptive hearts, that is not a small achievement.
