Imagine, sometimes I wonder the kind of leaders we have.

The forces of market determines price, so what if they decided to lock up their shop instead of selling at that reduced price, will they come and drag them from their houses?

How can a sane individual give such ultimatum without recourse to the reasons that brought about the increase at first.

so they should sell at a reduced price and incur loses.....then from where do they make up the deficit to get new goods. sometimes our leaders dont think through somethings before making utterances.

Hahaha

Era of ultimatum.

But why forcing them to reduce price?

No be wetin dem buy?

Is it not a free market where prices are determined by market forces?

When a person reason like this,it shows he's demented.

You claim, garri isn't affected by dollars, what of other things the seller consumes,he produces them abi?

The seller adjusted the price to meet up his basic consumption.

By the ,cos it's cheaper in other States, doesn't proved anything, there can be difference on cost of transportation, and other things

Imagine asking someone to bring 200k to join the garri union in Uyo market.

The government should follow through to ensure that the leadership of this selfish union is dealt with appropriately.

The practice is everywhere, maybe the union in akwa ibow are more greedy than other state. They determine the price of foodstuff in all major markets. When you take your goods down to the market they ask for your price if you're new then they sell at their own price if you're cheaper and pocket the balance plus their levies. You don't have a choice of selling cheaper. Go to mile 12 and see how powerful and authoritarian they are.

Does the Union own the market spots? How exactly can they seize them from non unionized seller?
bros those union tight like nupeng, ASUU abi na pengassan. They r strong.

But to me that isnt d solution, govt shud also go into food production, it isnt enough to just dole out monies in form of loans n grants to cooperatives to assist them in farming, they shud equally budget more monies to the agric ministry, akwaibom university of agriculture, these agencies will help the state to stabilixe n make food available n cheaper also.

Our political leaders are just plainly stupid.

For how long to we use force to stabilize prices of goods and services rather than allowing the law of demand and supply to control the market since we are are capitalist and not socialist economy.

If the prices of food stuffs are reduced what bout the prices of inputs and raw materials?

You better read and comprehend first before commenting. Government have the right to contol prices. That's why they had Price Control Board. Don't know whether it's still there. You talk of free market prices but they don't allow non union members to sell. How do explain that crayfish is cheaper in Aba than Akwa Ibom.
If i was the governor i won't give them altimatum I'll be banning them immediately. Did they build the market? Stup!d unions.

No sir...

It is caused by these state governors who lack vision.

State Govt are expected to partner with private sector agric firms and have reserves.

Anytime these unions raise prices of major foodstuffs, you open your reserve and flood the market with your products at cheaper prices. If you have excess then you close up your reserves to stabilize price.

Bros cool down and understand AI government na undecided

If the Union create artificial scarcity by stalling other traders (non union members) from selling garri (at their own discretional price) will you call that stupidity "market price"? Is that how you understand law of demand?

Classic example is other states buy crayfish from AI, yet they sell at cheaper price than AI, please tell us what special input and resources made them sell so expensively.
Re: Akwa Ibom Govt Gives Traders 31 Day Ultimatum To Reduce Price Of Foodstuff by gabe: 7:49am On Jun 08, 2017
There is no reason for the over 10k increase on 1 BAG of garri when akwa ibom is not the moon. Its just 2 hours from umuahia so prices of imported foodstuff shd only be slightly higher than umuahia. The funny one is crayfish is gotten in akwa ibom state, but cheaper in Abia after factoring in the additional transport costs!

From most comments here it's show's that must Nigerians are suffering from ignorance, unions activities is the main reasons why Niger Delta is not developing...all unions should be made voluntary, why on earth will union bodies force people to join them, at same time increase price of goods anyhow the feel like, A case study is Delta state all the traders are forced to join one union or the other they also set price for almost all the goods in the marketplaces. we are democracy unionism' should be made voluntary..A good example is northern Nigeria any body can take his or her farm produces to market and sell without any harassment from any union, i wonder why crayfish is cheap in kano than in akwa ibom that produce it , its not funny all this have stop they cant force people to live above the means , creating artificer hardship in this part of the country no wonder most of the southern leave the state of origin to northern part of the country because low cost of living

Everyone is just emphasising on the fact that garri is not purchased or processed with dollar, when farmers produce and sell garri, will they cook the naira notes and eat? are they not going to purchase other expensive items with there proceedings? abi you people want farmers to work themselves to death and fail to make a living all because Nigeria is in a doom. Government should play there own card right before placing bounties on innocent citizens

this isnt a new trend in akwa ibom, everything na money for the state, too expensive, i think the best option is to disband all unions, then see people determining prices according to cost of buying

"If you look at it, there are no customs duties on garri, and garri is not purchased with dollars, so it is the union that is causing the price increase".

If the traders should give away their goods b'cos no Customs duty was paid and goods is not purchased with dollars, what will be their fate when they want to purchase imported goods?.

You are missing the point I suppose. How do you explain this. I live in Lagos, I come to Osun to buy garri, take the garri back to Lagos and giving my expenses and the profit margin I add, my garri is still cheaper than what is obtainable in local markets around Oshogbo and Ede.
Mind you, they spend less in terms of turn over and expenses than I who comes to buy all the way from Lagos.
It is against economic laws. Beans, beef and tomatoes can not be more expensive in the north than in the south . It is against natural economic laws. So the unions are responsible for price fixing instead of allowing the natural rules of supply and demand control market prices.
That is the governments position.
And I don't think there is any issue with that.

well based on the topic I will say the govt must be crazy. what do they mean by ultimatum? are the trader not gonna sell what they buy with little profit ontop? or what now is the purpose of trading? instead of the govt. to repair the root cause of the problem they are busy building stadium. bunch of idiot. So they mean I should buy at 100 and sell at 35 because govt. say so........middle finger to all those bastard that wanna reap where they did not sow.

Various state government can also consider this, e.g sending lorry loads to the source of production and flooding their local market with it, in order to forcefully crash the price. But that will come and bit them during election and it's kinda dictatorial. I believe with this threat and eventual disbanding will make things right. The middle men are the problem. They buy very cheap from the farmers cos farmers are prohibited from selling directly to the consumers, and then control their prices like our electricity distribution companies.
