Alleged N30m ECOBANK Fraud, court Remands Balogun Market Leader In Prison by mrfolu(m): 2:15am On Jun 09, 2017
An Apapa Magistrate Court sitting before
Magistrate T. Abollarinwa has
ordered that the Chairman of Kaduna
Cluster of the Balogun Business Association,
BBA, Market in Trade Fair complex along the
Lagos-Badagry expressway, Mr. Celestine Nji
be remanded in prison custody pending when
he is able to fulfill his bail conditions for allegedly
defrauding ECOBANK PLC to the tune
of N30m. The Enugu State born trader sources
said connived with one Henry Chukwu of the
Visible Trust Investment now on the run to
forge documents as collateral with which they
obtained a loan to the aforementioned sum. It
was not too clear why the bank manager (name
withheld) did not verify the authenticity of the
documents but sources informed that Mr. Nji
used his position as chairman of the traders’ association
to impress on the bank that the documents
before it were genuine.
However, CrimeWorld weekly was told that
the manager of the bank later woke from deep
slumber at the maturity of the loan; checked
the documents once again only to discover that
they were bogus. In the mean time, the beneficiary
of the loan had disappeared into thin
air. Nji was subsequently arrested and charged
to court even as his sidekick was still at large.
He however, pleaded not guilty to the charges
pressed against him.
The prosecuting Police Officer, Inspector
Tony Elibe who though, did not object to the
bail application, however prayed the court for
a stiffer condition so as not to pervert justice
considering the enormity of the offence.
Presiding Magistrate T. Abollarinwa therefore,
granted Nji bail in the sum of N1m with
two sureties in like sum.
He has since been remanded in prison custody
until he satisfies his bail conditions while the
matter had been adjourned till May 11, 2017.
