Hey people, I’m really sorry for the late update. Let’s not waste any more time and dive right in.

Who is a Location Manager?

The location manager is a member of the film crew responsible for finding and securing locations to be used, obtaining all fire, police and other governmental permits, and coordinating the logistics for the production to complete its work. They are also the public face of the production, and responsible for addressing issues that arise due to the production's impact on the community.

RESPONSIBILTIES
• Liaising with the director to discuss movie projects and working to their creative vision
• Finding ideal location for a film shoot
• ensuring no disruptive noises or events are likely to occur during the shoot;
• negotiating access and drawing up a contract with location owners;
• organising permissions for access, for example, with local authorities and the police;
• scheduling crew arrival dates and times and keeping all parties informed on site;
• ensuring the technical specifications for equipment, power sources and crew accommodation on site are met;
• ensuring compliance with health, safety and security requirements and undertaking risk assessments;
• providing all relevant support information to all services and crew;
• arranging schedules for the day with the assistant director to ensure continuity;
• managing the location on the day and resolving practical or people-related problems as they arise;
• supervising location support staff throughout the process;
• dealing with members of the public who may intrude upon a shooting location;
• ensuring the final clearing up ('the wrap') runs smoothly and thanking site owners.
• This list of responsibilities is not definitely not exhaustive but you can infer that it involves a lot of responsibilities.

Skills you will need

• Have plenty of initiative
• Be able to visualise and find potential locations
• Have excellent organisational skills
• Have good negotiating skills
• Have good problem solving skills
• Have good communication skills
• Be reliable and enthusiastic
• Be flexible and able to work long hours
• Have a full driving licence
• Have a good working knowledge of health and safety requirements.

Education
Although a degree is not strictly necessary for entry into this line of work, completing an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject, such as media studies, film studies or photography may boost your chances of securing an entry-level position.
So how do you become a location manager?
A common way to begin a career as a location manager is to first gain experience in the film industry as a production assistant or a location scout. This allows aspiring location managers to gain a complete understanding of certain elements of production, such as spatial requirements for a filming location.

Salary

Most location managers work as freelancers and are paid on a contract basis. Many enter the career as an assistant manager or location scout and so would start on a lower salary.
Rates of pay for location managers vary widely, depending on experience, reputation within the industry and the type of production.

LOCATION SCOUT

It is not often we hear of the role of a Location Scout in Nollywood. Some might even ask if such a job role exist in Nollywood. However, Location scouting is a vital process in the pre-production stage of filmmaking. Once scriptwriters, producers or directors have decided what general kind of scenery they require for the various parts of their work that will be shot outside, the search for a suitable place or "location" outside the studio begins.

What the job requires

The job often requires a lot of time on the road, a keen eye to pinpoint exactly what setting would be ideal for a given scene and a love of exploration that’s already familiar to avid travellers.
Location scouts also look for generally spectacular or interesting locations beforehand, to have a database of locations in case of requests.
It is important to note that the job is not always as glamorous as it sounds. Nor is it necessarily a guaranteed ticket to exotic travel. Many scouts become the location manager after finding the right setting, handling the logistics, legalities and communication required to use the location.
The job is, however, a chance to delve into a place – whether a local neighbourhood or a far-flung locale – and see every corner through a filmmaker’s lens.

SET DECORATION

SET DECORATION
A Set Decorator is the head of the Set Decoration department in the film and television industry, responsible for selecting, designing, fabricating, and sourcing the "set dressing" elements of each set in a Feature Film, Television, or commercial.
The set decorator is responsible for converting the blank canvas of the set into a space that feels authentic, lived-in, and believable. This artist deals in the details, the small touches that reveal to the audience something about the person or people who occupy the locations of films and television shows.

DUTIES
• Works in collaboration with the production designer, Director and Producer
• Responsible for furnishing interior and exterior sets for film and television
• Analysing the script and listing all items needed for the film set
• Finding, hiring or commissioning props
• Keeping detailed records before and during shooting and returning all props when they’re no longer needed

EDUCATION & SKILLS
• A university degree in film and television production is helpful. Courses in art history and interior design are invaluable to a set decorator, but you should also consider studying world history, and urban planning, as elements all of these come into play when visualizing the details of a character’s life.
• You can also take a specialist course in film and/or theatre production design.
• A set Decorator is knowledgeable about lighting, technical materials, textiles, mechanics of machinery and technology, paint techniques, construction practices, upholstery and drapery, decorating trends, and period detail.

Most of all, you should be someone who not only wonders what some one like Nnamdi Azikwe’s toothbrush looked like or whether we will use silverware in the year 3010, but enjoys coming up with a good answer.

PROPS MASTER
A property (commonly shortened to prop) is an item used on screen or stage to help enhance a performance. It can make a scene feel more authentic or help actors play their role more adequately.
Put simply: they’re a vital part of film, TV, and theatre.
But why?
Props are most commonly used in conveying the time and place the narrative is set. Props are often the only indicator of what decade, or cultural movement a story is set in.
For example, if a narrative is set before Nigeria’s independence, certain props will be used to show that. The prop maker will have to thoroughly research that time period to convey this to an audience. That is what filmmakers like Kunle Afolayan did with his movie October 1st.

Character
Film characters often become instantly recognisable through their props.

Safety
This is often overlooked, but props can help ensure the safety of actors. A fake knife of gun can look just as intimidating as the real thing when done well, and don’t put actors in any immediate threat.

SO WHO IS A PROP MASTER?
The property master, often called the prop(s) master, is an artistic and organizational employee in a film, television or theatrical production who is responsible for purchasing, acquiring, manufacturing, properly placing, and/or overseeing any props needed for a production

DUTIES:

• In preproduction, the prop master reviews the script and makes a list of all required items the cast must interact with.
• For period-specific shows, this person will do research to identify the emblematic style of the era and ensure all props are period-appropriate.
• The prop master is responsible for providing the production manager with a cost estimate based on what can be purchased and any materials required for building new pieces, as well as the inevitable repair and replacement of damaged pieces.
• During the show’s run, the prop master is tasked with supervising the props crew in pre-setting all the necessary pieces, leading movements during scene changes, and supervising the strike of the set.

EDUCATION/SKILLS
You don’t need a specific qualification. But you will need a background in art or design.
Have an imaginative approach to work
Have spatial awareness and a sense of design
As a prop master, you will creatively interpret the script and the abstract vision of the director, effectively manage your department, and deliver on tight deadlines. You must be a team player who is willing to collaborate on a shared concept—not just your own.

MAKEUP DEPARTMENT

Rita Dominc in the movie ''The Meeting''

A make-up artist is the person who applies make-up to your individual actors. This could be a dramatic look that totally changes the appearance of the actor or it could be just a natural look or anything in-between.
It is an essential part of the entertainment industry as it helps breathe life into a character by making them more three dimensional.
An actor has a much easier time being able to commit to a role if they truly believe that they have been transformed into the character they are playing.
The best makeup artists are those whose work you never really notice. As an audience member, assuming all other elements are met (acting, writing, directing), it becomes that much easier for you to become invested in the characters on the screen when the makeup is done well. It is a true artistry.

Makeup Artist Jobs

There are four different jobs in a makeup department. How many of these positions exist in a project depends on the project's needs and budget:

Key Makeup Artist: They are in charge of the makeup department. They actually design the makeup for each actor/actress and assign individual makeup artists to apply it.
Makeup Artist: These are the individuals who actually apply the makeup to the actor.

Makeup Assistant: They help with some of the lesser tasks like body makeup and organization.
Makeup Effects Artist: They design and create special makeup effects using prosthetics, latex, and animatronics.

Skills and Education

There are numerous schools that offer make up for film and television classes which will not only help you learn the craft, but will introduce you to others in the industry. You might also consider taking a class in color theory which will help you to understand the basics of color.
Experiment and familiarize yourself with the wide variety of products available. Watch a number of movies and see what a makeup artist did to achieve certain looks and experiment on your own. To become a makeup effects artist, you'll want to have a basic understanding of chemistry as many of the pieces you develop will be quite technical.

Career Advice

A good makeup artist is creative with their craft, but also listens to the directors, actors, and producers so that they can achieve the desired results.

You must be a people person and it helps to have a great personality. The hours are often quite long and initially, the pay may be extremely low, but if you remain tenacious, you will achieve your goals.

Good to be here again people. Today we will delve into COSTUME

Patience Egwurube costume designer of the period movie ’76 for which she won the 2017 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) for “Best Costume Designer”.

So what is Costume Designing?
Costume design is the investing of clothing and the overall appearance of a character or performer. Costume may refer to the style of dress particular to a nation, a class, or a period. In many cases, it may contribute to the fullness of the artistic, visual world which is unique to a particular theatrical or cinematic production. The most basic designs are produced to denote status, provide protection or modesty, or provide visual interest to a character

A Costume Designer work closely with the Production Designer to make sure the costumes fit in with their overall vision and work with the chosen lighting and camera angles. They also collaborate with the hair and make-up team to make sure a cohesive look is created.

During pre-production, Costume Designers break down scripts scene by scene to work out how many characters are involved and what costumes are required. They then develop costume plots for each character. Plots ensure that colours and styles do not mimic each other in the same scene, and highlight the characters' emotional journeys by varying the intensity and depth of colours.

Costume Designers must carry out research into the costume styles, designs and construction methods suitable for the time period, using resources such as libraries, museums and the Internet. They may also discuss costume and character ideas with performers.
They deliver initial ideas to Directors about the overall costume vision, character plots and original costume designs, using sketches and fabric samples

QUALIFICATION
You will need an HND, degree or postgraduate qualification in a subject such as Costume Design, Fashion, Theatre Design or Performing Arts (Production).

You will undergo further training on the job by learning from more experienced designers

CAREER ADVICE
The role of Costume Designer is not an entry-level position and you will need considerable knowledge and experience in order to design for feature films.

After gaining qualifications, you can expect to start your career as a Costume Assistant or Wardrobe Trainee before progressing through the costume department.
You will probably need to work in theatre, film and TV until you become established and specialise in one area.
