This solution is strenuous but it's what works for me. Open contact you want to delete, erase the number and save the contact with just the name (no number). Wait for it to reflect, then delete. This happens mostly with contacts linked on WhatsApp. You have to remove any number attached to the contact.

Don't download any other contact app. What you need to do is to unlink the contact before deleting it .
