Insect bites are break wounds or lacerations caused by insects. An insect bites as soon as it is troubled or have a slightly threatened and defends itself, or as soon as it needs to feed.

The body reactions depends on the kind of insect and how susceptible the individual is to insect bite.

General Insect Bite Symptoms

Only when bitten or stung, do some know that an insect is on your skin.
Some don’t spot the insect and may not be sensitive to a bite or sting until one or other of the following symptoms begin to show:

• swelling, which may be concentrated in the area bitten or may extend throughout the area of the insect bite

• redness or rash

• pain in the affected area or in the muscles

• itching

• heat on and around the site of the bite or sting

• numbness or tingling in the affected area

How To Prevent Insect Bites

To put a stop to insect bites, above all in humid weather, the next steps may help:

By means of structural barriers, such as windows or net

Avoiding wooded, bushy and green areas

Avoiding deep fragrant makeup and vivid decorated clothing

Covering drinks and trash cans

Wearing extensive sleeves and extended pants, tucked into shoes or socks, and a cap
Inspection of containers for still water, as this offer a breeding base for mosquitoes.
Insect repellants

It may be necessary to use an insect repellant. It can be sprayed on clothes and skin, but not the face. It is important to read the product's instructions before use.

Insect repellent is not fitting for infants. If a child is less than 10 years old, the repellent should have a limit of no more than 10 percent DEET. Eucalyptus oil also works well, but it is not suitable for children under 3 years old.

Repellent should not be applied to children's hands, around the eyes, or to areas where there are cuts and irritated skin.

If using an insect repellent and a sunscreen together, the sunscreen should be used first.

Insect Bites Treatments

Treatment depends on the form of end result to the insect bite or sting.
If it is reddish and ache at the site of the bite, applying of ice is enough treatment.

Scrub the area gently with soap and water to strip off impure particles dropped behind by several insects (such as mosquitoes). These particles may pollute the wound if not removed.

Refrain from scratching the bit or stung area as this may set off the skin to crack down and an infection to form. Intermittent cool packs or frost may drive down swelling.

You may consider treating the itching at the site of the bite with an over-the-counter antihistamine such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) in cream or pill form. Calamine lotion also helps relieve the itching ( this is what I use ).
