As unattainable as a dream job might sound, with the right amount of forethought and preparation, you can make the move.

Here are a few ideas that can open up new possibilities for you.

1. Think about what makes you happy and fulfilled - The first big step to getting your dream job is identifying what roles, positions, or skills, make you feel happy and fulfilled. Take time to do a self-assessment of your values, how you like to work and what you'd be compelled to do even if you never got paid.

2. Join a Career Oriented Group – For job seekers and those considering a change in career; a career oriented group is an ideal starting point. Participants are always guided through a self-reflective and supportive process of identifying what their personal needs and values are; what they want and have to offer; what is holding them back; what can help and what steps needs to be taken. Join Social media (e.g LinkedIn) groups that keeps you updated on current job openings and career growth opportunities.

3. Identify your personal values and ideals - Identifying your personal values can allow you to really focus on what you are passionate about in your career.

4. Research the educational requirements for your dream job - To increase your chances of landing your dream job, you will need to show potential employers or investors that you have the educational requirements for the job. Perhaps this means earning a paycheck at your current job while doing a part-time internship in your new field, or taking an adult-education class or workshop on the weekend.

There are several ways to go about finding out where to get the training you need;

Professional Associations: Use any search engine to find the professional association for an occupation. Then go to the organization's website and look for a section about education or careers.
Your Network: If you have contacts in your prospective career field, find out where they received their training.
5. Identify the skills required for your dream job - To get a better sense of the expectations of your dream job, you should research the skill set required to attain the job and do well in the role. Develop mastery in your chosen profession so you will continue to create job opportunities throughout your entire life.

Top employability skills to hone in order to land that dream job;

Communication skills — listening, speaking and writing. Employers want people who can accurately interpret what others are saying and organize and express their thoughts clearly.
Teamwork — In today’s work environment, many jobs involve working in one or more groups. Employers want someone who can bring out the best in others.
Analytical and problem-solving skills — Employers want people who can use creativity, reasoning and past experiences to identify and solve problems effectively.
Computer/technical literacy — Although employers expect to provide training on job-specific software, they also expect employees to be proficient with basic computer skills.
Strong work values — Dependability, honesty, self-confidence and a positive attitude are prized qualities in any profession. Employers look for personal integrity.
6. Translate internship positions into full time positions - Being a good intern can show the organization that you may also be a good full time employee and you may be able to use your passion, charisma, and eagerness to learn to your advantage.

Here are some tips you need to land a full time role after your internship;

Seek out internship that requires substantial work. Often small and medium-sized companies, which can be notoriously understaff, provide the best opportunities.
Adhere strictly to company’s dress code and office hours. Treat anyone with respect and professionalism, and don’t bad-mouth any co-workers.
• Once the internship begins, don’t be shy to engage with your full time colleagues. Use the internship to network with senior leaders and your fellow interns.
7. Tailor your resume to your dream job - Some recruiters receive up to 250 resumes on average in response to an open position, falling into that pile reduces your resume to little more than a needle in a haystack. On top of that, recruiters have developed ways to eliminate bad eggs, making their lives easier and yours harder. They use two methods - Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and quick scans.
Before you send out resumes to potential employers, you should tailor your resume to reflect the educational requirements and skillset needed for your dream role. Doing this will show employers that you are aware of the requirements of the dream role and have considered what you as an employee can offer them. In developing a resume and other promotional materials for the field you want to pursue, think about how your current skills and talents apply to the responsibilities you'll hold in the new job.

8. Look online for positions to apply for - Check online job portal like CareerNaija for positions. You may find several, even dozens, of positions that seem like dream jobs. Keep in mind that there may be hundreds of people applying to the same job, so you will likely have to apply to many of these positions before even getting an interview
Building relationships with recruiters may expose you to career opportunities that you might not learn about otherwise. Most employers don’t advertise the positions they hire recruiters to help fill, which are typically a firm’s most senior and highest-paying.

9. Contact Companies that interest you - Not all jobs that exist are posted. If you find a company or business that really excites you, reach out to them.
You can take the following steps to getting their attention;

Have an outline on what you plan to do for the company in the next 6 months.
Contact the management team and make a case on why you should be hired.
Prepare and submit an online presentation and portfolio of your skills or research.
Email your performance review from your past employer.
Become friends with people who work in companies you’re interested in. Enjoy learning about them and supporting them.
10. Make Complementary Cards - Business cards are a great thing to have when you are meeting people on the go. It's always a bit frustrating to not have a business card when someone asks for it. More so when they've just handed you theirs and are expecting one in return, and even more so when the reason you don't have one is because you have no employer to give you any.
