This evening ushered in Tisha B’Av, a date known as the saddest day on the Jewish calendar. Several solemn and sad events are commemorated on the 9th day of the biblical month of Av, or in Hebrew, Tisha B’Av, the Jewish people mourn the terrible tragedies, including the destruction of both the First and Second Temples.
The annual day of mourning is marked by a 25-hour fast. Jewish people in Israel and around the world will spend the day without food or drink, praying and reading from Lamentations, the biblical book that centers on the events in the aftermath of the destruction of the First Temple.

As a young man, I always joined the thousands of people from Jerusalem and the surrounding areas to gather at the Kotel, to mourn in the shadow of the only physical reminder of the Second Temple.

During almost two millennia in the Diaspora, Tisha B’Av continued to be marred by tragedy. The First Crusades, which ultimately led to tens of thousands of Jewish deaths, was launched on the 9th of Av. The Edict of Expulsion expelling all Jews from England began on Tisha B'Av. In more modern history, the 9th of Av in 1914 saw Germany entering World War I, an event which gave way a few years later to World War II and the Holocaust. Then, on Tisha B’Av, SS commander Heinrich Himmler got the nod of approval for what was called the “Final Solution,” the worst and most methodical attempt to eradicate the Jewish people in our time.

For me today Tisha B'Av is less about the religious components and more about the heritage of the Jewish people, the national homeland lost for 2000 years. For me, Tisha B'Av is a reminder that we can not take this land for granted.

There is absolute proof that the present site of the Jewish "Wailing Wall" in Jerusalem is NOT any part of the Temple that existed in the time of Herod and Jesus. In fact, that particular location that the Jewish authorities have accepted represents the Western Wall of an early Roman fortress (finally built and enlarged by Herod the Great). King Herod called it Fort Antonia, after the famous Mark Anthony who lived at the end of the first century before Christ.
