|The brand Of 'X' by Creeza(m): 5:35pm On Aug 03, 2017|
So , I said I was working on something that I would drop early next Year. So far so good it has been progressing but staying away for sometime , stories have popped into my head and I can't help but share.
This story and a few more to come are mere hyping to my upcoming thriller ' A dance of Fury' ( note the name might change. And plagiarism is allowed your story and mine can never be same) . But please say no plagiarism.
thank you for reading that near-comedy-intro above. Sometimes , I laugh at my own stupidity but you can't blame me. The weather in August is very bright and sunny.
Okay enough said . #leggo.
Warning: Parts of the story might be taken off the thread after weeks of updating.. That's to say ' removed' but you can still get it on okada books or directly to your email. But until I post the link to okadabooks, please do enjoy the ride. Thank you and God bless you , Richly.

THE BRAND of 'X '
The invisible and tiny bugs sucked the men dry. More especially, the floor irritated their skins. They were restless.
For Benedict, he wanted to believe it was a dream as he tried to adjust his shirt and boxer, but the pain under his left leg reminded him he was in the last place he wished for. ' It was supposed to be the last hit 'he kept on reminding himself since the night he got confined to a police cell. ' Benny see what you caused'
The keys to the cell door gave a metalic cry as the IPO stood gloriously in his shirt and jeans . Ben wondered if he was here to remind them of the court threat or make his usual comments' when are your people coming? Its another day yet nobody is here to make bail'
Ben folded himself into the corner where he had been for five days. An act done to accommodate other seven inmates. He wondered if some of them enjoyed the dungeon with two hefty guys sleeping on the thirty year -old German floor. He knew this place of peril used to be an estate for government workers. ' It was probably the store room' according to biggy_ a fellow inmate_ the building now mutated into a place for soul and body torture.
Nothing felt or smelt right. Ben could tell the disgust on IPO Matthews face as the man squinted his nose.
Ben had lost any sense of smell. He was practically stinking more than a dead pig unlike when he was fresh meat for the inmates, five days ago when he arrived with John.
' John ' the officer called out .
' Yes sir' john said and sprang up with hope.
Ben knew that John was elated to be called in such situations.
Probably his father whom he failed to reach because of fear, had somehow got the news from john's friend. A younger boy who brought him food twice in the last three days. Now he was being bailed . Ben thought as he scratched his shirt , tugging a bug that drained him.
' Benedict ' the chain-smoking officer said.
He limped up and came closer to the light. His skin appreciated the sun for the first time in twenty two years. He had enjoyed free gift of nature and took it for granted but after five days and four nights, sunlight became priceless.
' Your elder brother and uncle have abandoned you. What is happening ? The officer said.
It was a salah holiday morning. The police worked 24/7.
' I don't know ,Sir'
' How is your leg?
' Getting better '
' Good' the officer shook his head.
' Where is your house? The both of you stay together? He continued as he stared into John's face then back to Ben's.
' No sir! John opted as he stroke his dirty bare chest.
His only piece of clothing was the rubbish around his waist which had been ruined by the inmates. Ben had pity for him, but it didn't matter now. They had designed him but forced Ben to wash the toilet.
' Okay .' The Ipo said ' come out. Both of you . We are going to your houses'
' Move ' he ordered.
Ben felt pain shot up into his brain. They were going to disgrace him in his apartment. All his friends would know where he had been for the past few days; Benedicta would be so ashamed of him as her boyfriend; she wouldn't care if he did it to insure her birthday. These were the least of his troubles. They would uncover evidence to infringe him the more.
Ben wished so dearly that Ekhian _ his elder brother, would leave Owerri and come straight to Benin city. He wanted him here, not his uncle who had arrived the first day and ever since returned just once with food instead of bail .
' I for bail you today ' his words flashed through Ben's mind .
He had been so serious that day that Ben thought he would be free after hours.
' But the IPO in charge of your case is not around. And... Even the money sef no be here, Things hard as you know it...'
The only thing Ben knew was that he was already a convict if he survived till the next day. That is if the Badoo gang he owed money doesn't get to him first.
Worse still, his doctor had told him he had a chronic diabetes type 2, an incurable HSV std. The options were open.
As they moved down the corridor, Biggy's voice came . He talked to another cell mate.
' Chai. This boy wey no do anything. He go still suffer.. Naija eh... Oya see now, they wann go search for exhibit and een uncle never.....'
Biggy's voice faded into the background and back into the inferno.
When they arrived the counter. Inspector Mathew ordered them to wear their clothes.
Ben turned his polo inside out. He put on his trousers and wore his leather sandals. He was watchful of the bandage round his left foot. Just at the middle of the foot.
After their ' cell movement papers' had been cleared by a female constable , they went outside and then to the back of the main building.
Every police officer in the precint, except the D.p.o who had never met Ben , had pity on him. They gave him preferential treatment, after he sustained the wound.
His uncle hadn't noticed the wound. Probably he did, Ben could not tell but the pastor was never his favourite. It was even a matter of urgency that made their paths cross again.
' Sit down here' the officer ordered John and Ben when they entered his office.
His aid , Mr John Aremu was writing some protocols on paper. He had been the one taking care the duo. But it was rather unfortunate that Ben got injured under his watch.
What a marred achievement , Ben had wondered. Mr John had been so kind that he had even been the one who allowed him wear his shirt during the cold nights while his cell mates were exposed to mosquitoes, chills and bugs.
They were not allowed to use bread packets to lay their heads. It had been terrible and somehow , Ben was happy to breathe in fresh air.
He knew John was too. It was obvious until Mr Matthew cut them short of temporal joy.
' Aremu' he called out to seargent John' please be fast with their paper works. Tomorrow we are taking them to court and from there , white house'
' But for now, the head of field ops will accompany me to search their houses.' He turned to Ben whose heart was already skipping ' When did you say your uncle will come again? What work does your brother do? I don't know what to do for you again. I have tried my best'
' Sir let me call him'
' With whose phone' Matthew asked him.
Ben told him he would like to use his phone.
' My airtime ? Matthew asked.
' You told me before, that you forgot a digit'
' I remember it now'
'Call the number' Matthew said when started to dial.
He hadn't been the one talking to Ben's brother so he had not stored Ekhian's number.
After some minutes on the phone with Ekhian, the officer dropped the mobile on his table and picked up a pen. He pocketed it and his face lit up.
Ben wondered if he could ask the content of their call before Matthew walked out without a word.
What's going on? Ben thought.
He turned to Mr Aremu. ' Sir please did you speak with my brother yesterday?
Aremu dropped his pen ' your uncle came yesterday.'
Ben didn't know that. He was shocked that the devil had visited without even dropping by to say hello.
' But he left after some minutes of talking to the IPO. Mr Matthew'
' Can I talk to my brother . Please'
' Sir , me too' John begged.
' You , that your brother's number is a dead end' Aremu hissed ' Are you sure your name is John?
' Yes sir . John Okadigbo'
' You are not serious' Mr Aremu continued as he gave Ben the mobile ' Take , its ringing'
'Hello. Big bro'
Ben hesitated after some seconds before telling Ekhian what was at stake.
After some anxiety and unrest in Ekhian's voice, Ben knew what he had discussed with the IPO.
' But he is not here '
' Okay. Thank you' Ben said as he breathed in air of relief.
The fear he had was diluted. He feared death, but rotting in jail was heart drenching and scary.
The mere thought of being confined to a place of solitude for months , tamed the demons in him. He could bear anything but not that. It would drive him mad. He had already lost most of his senses in the cell, he was empty inside him. It was both as a result of malnutrition and mental anxiety.
' What did he say? Mr Aremu asked when he collected his phone.
' Sir please can I call my father?' John interrupted.
Ben kept silent as he listened to their conversation.
'Look My friend , don't disturb me'
' Please sir'
' You don't know where this will take you to' Aremu intercepted ' by the time you get to white house prison yard, you will realise'
Mr Aremu continued to scribble on his paper. He brought out his phone and gave it to John.
' No sir. Please talk to him. I can't stand his... Please talk to him. Let me call the number for you'
Why ? Mr Aremu asked
He has done terrible things in the past. That's why. Ben said in his mind. John had disclosed it to him in the cell.
Ben had kept the innocent face. It was his first time stealing as he had told John . He had stood his ground and since everyone believed him, nothing else mattered to him.
'Sir.. Please just ...'
John still pleaded without the right words.
The frantic mood progressed as Pastor Osas walked into the office.

Wow so the man called creeza is back following these to the end,
|Re: The brand Of 'X' by Creeza(m): 9:44pm On Aug 03, 2017|
He cleared his throat before he greeted the officer.
Mr Aremu lashed at him. ' Good morning. Welcome. You called me yesterday evening.'
' Yes I did ' pastor Osas replied.
' Don't call me and ask me of issues about my work. Anything you want to discuss should be done here , at the station..'
Ben's uncle tried to explain everything . He said it was about the bail .
' I know' Aremu shot back - please issues like that are discussed in the station. Our job is very sensitive'
' Sorry to hear that'
' No problem'
Ben greeted his uncle . The greeting was touched by frost bite.
They both knew the tension at stake but it was in the public and family always comes first.
' How is the leg?
' Fine sir. we would be taken to the court tomorrow'
Pastor Osas lit up with surprise .
' Why? I don't understand ... what are you doing here in this office? In fact I just went to ...'
He rambled on as mr Aremu continued to write on his paper.
His voice faded when Mr matthew walked into the office.
They both exchanged greetings.
' Look my friend, if you cause me to write rubbish on this paper. I will deal with you' Mr Aremu's voice barked at John who disturbed him.
Matthew turned to John when he sat down and disdain was written all over his face.
' Thief.. You will know my true colour today' he said to John.
Pastor Osas disclosed his intentions to The IPO.
The IPO started to advice Ben on good behaviour. He told him that a young man of his age shoudnt be involved in stealing. He said it was bad and would only tarnish his future potentials.
' I mean , all your family members are learnered and educated . I presume this is your first time stealing, isn't it?
' I'm surprised too '. Pastor Osas reaffirmed ' I was shocked when I got the news because in our family , it has never been heard that we stole. We work hard and .... Infact.. Well it has happened it , has happened'
Ben was dead silent.
After much protocol and papers signed. They released him to the custody of his uncle.
Ben thought it was all a dream , it was real as he took steps. Painful steps of limping.
One step at a time, they made it past the courtyard of the station. Nobody restrained their movement, freedom it was indeed.
When they walked almost ten minutes, Ben broke the silence.
' Thank you sir. I dont know what I would have done without your help'
' You are welcome. Its my responsiblity. If I don't do it ... Well, let's just say that the lord has been good and... if I must ask, why did you take another person's property just for revenge?
What kind of question was this man askng ? Ben thought.
It was anger. He replied ' I was angry'
Ben knew he had lied. He needed the money. Although he couldn't tell why or how , his phone got stolen the very night he was nabbed by the police.
' Then you should have left it for God'
' I was tempted ' Ben replied as he painfully dragged his leg along.
Every step was excruciating, not as painful as the past between him and the man he called his uncle.
' Take this ' pastor Osas stretched out .
They were already at the high way and and would soon path ways.
Ben hesitated but somehow, he knew the money was from his brother.
He collected it and thanked the pastor without eye contacts.
' Just manage that one abeg. Things are hard. I recently moved to a new apartment with my family and I know how much I spent... I ... Well, the lord will provide '
He brought out another sum.
- use this one to treat the leg. How did you get the wound?
' I tried to escape' Ben said ' I..'
' You tried to what? His uncle shouted.
If only he listened , Ben wanted to complete the narrative. Instead he kept mute afterwards.
Pastor Osas held unto Ben's shoulder.
' Benedict.' He paused before he continued ' I know you blame me for your parents death. I know I had a dispute with your Dad but the truth is that the fire was an accident. And I am sorry for doing unethical things to you in the past. I am changed now. Belive me, old things are past away... Well, the lord is good '
He paused and Ben wondered how a little candle engulfed a building. Someone must have had evil plans. He could forgive a former pedophile but not a murderer.
' I will try my best to make it up to you. To Ekhian, and Eddy. Family. Ben' he hit him on the shoulder ' its all we have. We need each other'
Ben stood silent and a tear broke free from his eyes. He wiped it without saying a word.
He missed his mother. She had perished in the fire and the gift for her birthday became a gift for her gravestone.
They stopped a bus and pastor boarded it . He bade farewell to Benedict.
Benedict limped to a nearby chemist to take a short of ATs. He had taken one, the night of the injury and wondered why the officers hadn't brought him back.
The girl who administered the drug to him was more curious to know why he had been arrested.
Ben laughed to his own stupidty. His leg was swollen and stunk but the pain was reduced.
' Cuff him ' an officer had said the night he was brought to the chemist.
It had been pouring down steadily. The roads were flooded and the darkness
Was enough to shield an escaape for a criminal.
' Cuff wetin' another patrol officer said .
' No be this boy we carry come that day ?' Another said.
' Yes.' The patrol officer who spoke earlier replied ' you wan to cuff him . This one fit run? Where the leg wey e go use'
'Let me see the leg' the nurse's voice brought Ben back to the present.
' It will cost you 2 thousand for evrything. '
The injection is 1,5 and the dressing of the wound is 500.
Ben hadn't enough his uncle had given him just 1900.
' Just give me the injection'
He wondered where the man who had treated him the night before had gone to.
He asked the girl when she came back with the syringe .
she told him he was off duty and would be back by 7p.m
' That explains it' ben said.
Nothing' Ben said .
He had treated him free of charge the night he came with the officers.
' How did you come about the injury'
' I was involved in a cell fight' Ben said to her.
' You might have developed a tetanus infection if you had left it untreated'
After much ado, Ben stood up and walked out as he stumbled across prying eyes and ears.
They were three girls and looked at Ben with great interest.
' What really happened to you '
The nurse called from behind.
' I mean why and how did you get into a police cell?
Ben paused in his tracks. He turned and held unto the entrance protector.
' Trust me. You don't want to know my story'.
As he said the words , Benedicta's face flashed into his eyes. He thought about all the phones he had stolen in the past, he even kept all the sim cards.
It was Benedicta's birthday in 24 hours and fate had given him the opportunity to do one thing right- be alive and healthy for his girlfriend and everyone he cared about.
' Well since you wish to know' Ben said ' I will tell you'
He moved few inches towards her when a power bike revved across the streets. It came like a thunder striking through the air ways.
Before Ben could turn to behold the scene, the nurse foolishly dived and scampered for cover .
She fell down backwards . Blood took away her white dress' virginity. The syringe she had stabbed into Ben's left arm lay bare on the cold tiles.
Voices in Ben's head and from screams, faded sooner than they came. He raised his head from the floor and looked upon the lifeless body beside him.
' What have I done? The answers were haunting him as they failed to come.
He tried to grab her up and check for pulse but then a pain shot up his right arm.
Blood stained his polo . He realised he had been shot too, a few inches glazed up the arm. The bullet had not penetrated.
What have I done? This is not how it was suppsed to be' he kept on fighting his inner guts.
People gathered and with heavy eyes and bleeding hearts , prayed for the young lady to hold on to life. Help did not come any faster than a snail.
He used the crowd as a cover and disappeared with pains allover his body.
They wanted him dead. To him, his life was by choice, not by chance.
To be continued.

Continued ' the brand of 'X'
' I will wait for you' Charles said.
His chocolate skin glowed calmly in the dim light of his cab. It was just another evening to make ends meet, little did he know that the evening would change his story_forever.
'Okay. Give me five minutes' His passenger replied as she slammed the door. Her penchant physique cast a shadow on the grey coloured Honda.
Her accent was western Nigerian and Ben snared from the distance he hid. He never liked Yorubas. They were the hardest to please. Even his gang , the ' Kvng Nazis' comprised mostly of the Afonjas.
Charles tapped away on the steering wheel, when Ben surfaced from the corner he hid.
He had curled himself in an uncompleted building after the gun incident. He had fled the scene and took refuge in the building. He tied his arm with a piece of clothing, torn out of his polo. He had forced himself to sleep.
The noise of the Taxi when it pulled over had roused him up. He observed the streets, the lights, the passers-by and the encroaching darkness.
Ben made way to the taxi at the exit of the lady into a building.
Charles jumped up in his sit with fear and his heart entered his anus. He would have admitted he saw a ghost but that would sound stupid. A zombie maybe; neither; but something else : Fear.
Ben hopped into the back seat. He leaned forward. His body ached all over and his intestines ate him up. He tried to hide it, but he knew the driver sensed something.
'Drive' Ben said as he slammed the door shut.
' I said drive' he repeated.
'Where ? ' The semi-confused taxi man said ' I can't just... Wait.. I mean who are you? Where did you pop out from?
' Since when did taxi drivers care about their passenger's history? Ben replied.
He squeezed his eyelids in agony. His bloodshot eyes blinked faster than they closed. His upper right arm and left leg were heavy. He wondered if the ATs worked.
Why was he dizzy?
' Nothing personal. The moment demands it, man' the driver said ' I'm waiting on another'
Ben said he was aware. He offered to pay double the amount. Even triple.
' You got money? The driver queried.
'I'll pay you. Just drive'
' How? Look , you can't just burst out of the sky and order me. You appear to be in trouble. Fine. But you are more like one who escaped hell, man. ' He paused ' how am I sure that you are not a demon?'
Ben continued ' I will pay you in full . I promise'
The taxi driver ordered him out of his car. He threatened to drive straight to the police. Ben knew was being honest.
However, he wished he could snap his neck and cart away with his car. It was easy , he had done it before. That would be nice if he had an alternative- flying maybe! But someone had to drive.
' You got a family? Ben asked him under a laboured breathe.
He pointed to a portrait in the pidgin hole.
' Man are you kidding me? Well yes. My wife Jasmine. That's my daughter , Liz ; the young man under my embrace' he pointed a finger to the portrait' that's my young Tyson. His name is Tayo'.
Another afonja. Ben thought, no wonder.
He said ' they are adorable'
' Thank you. Now get out of my car. The police are crawling evrywhere , in search of a criminal or suspect of a murder or God knows what he did. I can't have you in here, with...I mean' he gestured with his arm ' You have blood all over you, man'
Ben begged him.
' Who is after you and why is your life in danger?
' I don't know' he paused ' atleast not yet. That's why I have to find out. Who '
The man asked Ben how he came about the scratch on his arm. He wanted to know what had happened.
"I was hit by a stray bullet' Ben said.
The man raised his eyebrow. He was in a state of shock.
He asked Ben if he was the suspect the police were looking for.
' So you killed that young lady. It was you..I should have known' the driver said and tried to escape.
' Wait!!! Wait!! I didn't do it' Ben said ' like I told you - a stray bullet brushed my arm'
* Charles told him to turn himself in , to the police and explain.
' I can't '
Charles tilted his head and figured out there was more to this than he expected.
' Tell me why' he said and focused on the strange man in his car.
' Because I just got bailed. I can't go back in there. Its my girlfriend's birthday in 24 hours and I haven't seen or heard from her in five days. I need to.. ' He paused ' I was framed and arrested. It was a hit that went wrong. We- my home boys and I- realised in the nick of time that we had been led into a trap. Someone had to create a diversion ' He noticed Charles listening with great attention. He continued ' I took the bait, got arrested and I lied that I had stolen the phone as a means of revenge. That mine got missing in same manner. Truth was that it fell off when I fled, it must have fell somewhere. I can't remember where. So , it was a perfect excuse. ' He stopped to catch his breathe.
' I need to locate my home boys and warn them. Somebody is out to eliminate us. They probably think I'm dead and will take out my friends, one by one''
' Wait' Charles said ' who is the 'we '? I mean your friends . Who are they?

Continued .... The Brand Of X
Benedict geared up as he realised the item was just a piece of cake- A big ' Piece ' though.
So Benny made a cake for her birthday. She must have great plans for tomorrow. He thought.
' Where is she?
He scanned the living room.
He made way toward the kitchen and switched on the lights . He popped his head through the window, it was barely locked and he scanned the walls, he gazed at the rails where he had climbed up. It was near . One could easily jump to catch the window. He retreated and shut the window
The door to his fridge banged as he collected a bottle of yoghurt. He placed it on his feet and then, beside his arm.
It was the best feeling ever. A sign of relief.
He placed the yoghurt bottle back, a much darker item followed his swing as the fridge banged softly this time. He painfully took off his polo, poured the whisky on his right arm and his facial expression didn't go well.
' I'm going to die anyway' he said before he gulped the contents.
His health condition was like a candle stick, he hardly cared if he had diabetes 2.
He dropped the bottle on a table and headed towards his bedroom, blinked at the cake again but he was impatient. He had to know why everywhere was so calm.
Benedicta was fast asleep. She was an angel in his tank top T_shirt. She loved it and wore it whenever she was around. Her bum shorts were simply tempting, leaving a lot to the imagination.
He released his arm from the light switch and came nearer.
' Hey' he said softly.
He didn't mean to, but she was already awake,so he kissed her forehead.
' Hey you! She replied faintly' where have you been? She paused and gave a face.
' You stink..' She said and sat up. ' Why do you have blood on your arm? Your leg... What happened?
' I got into a fight'
' Get up. Get dressed. We have to leave'
He left her and selected a jacket from his wardrobe. He tossed it unto the bed and ripped off his trousers without delaying for a second.
He gazed at his reflection when he was in the bathroom. He wondered how he had gotten to that point in his life, where it was hard to stop.
His only desire was to show her care, he did terrible things just to make her happy. He did it without even thinking twice,
She got him thus far, until he was jailed for her sake.
' Open up' Benny banged on the door.
' Baby. ' She called out.
He pulled the bolt and allowed her allowed in.
He was unclad and cared less. He hadn't gone under the downpour because of the fresh wounds, he was sceptical about the pain.
Ben wondered what she wanted, she came forward and grabbed unto his neck line.
She leaned forward. Then further and further as her arm glazed his back and spine area. Then again further, she advanced and took her time in the act.
Ben's weight rested on his right foot, but soon he felt sweetness allover as he anticipated a kiss... Or maybe something more.
Outside the building , Charlie tried to put up with the cold even inside his honda as he rubbed his fingers profusely.
He should have been at home, in his bed, beside his sweet Jasmine.
Too bad for him, he wanted to help a lad in trouble.
He stepped out of his car, he wondered why the young man took time to come out.
' The young man ' he smiled to himself . He didn't even get to know his name.
' Mysterious young man indeed' he whispered and breathed out cold air.
Charles was very unaware of the danger he had put himself. These areas where thieves, assassins and even human -hunters thrived, was the last place he should be as he glanced at his wrist_watch, then towards the apartment where the man had climbed up.
The lights were on. But he saw no one, then a light went off .
' Something must be wrong' he said and humbly reached for his door.
Too late, a sound clicked behind him.
It was a familiar tone, he knew it from movies but never behind him before, both in a dream and real life.
A sting in his gut made him realise too soon. He did not need a magician to tell him that a pistol was caressing the skin of his skull, from behind.
He raised his arms up, impulsively, he hoped to catch a glimpse of his tormentor before his brain splatters into shrapnel.
To be continued.
