LIFE ISSUES...
BEYOND THE ACADEMIC CURRICULUM...
A few days ago, I had a discussion with a friend in his 50s that got me thinking about various critical issues of life again. He was so disturbed when he met an old classmate who needed the sum of 12,000 Naira to repair the gearbox of the Keke Marwa that he uses "to keep body and soul together" .The main issue was not the demand for the money, the trauma was the fact that this now old man finished from high school with Distinction. At that time it was known as Grade 1. The best students made Grade 1. Most of them would gain automatic entry into Prelim.. in various Universities.
They were the prize winners, they gave the valedictory speech, parents will use them as examples that other children must emulate.
So the pain was..how did a Grade 1 scholar become a Marwa Driver(Keke Marwa was also purchased for him by friends). Further questions from me also revealed that in the same class, same school are countless notable Nigerians. Some of them came out with Grade 3, Some with Grade 2.
The most important curriculum which Parents and Schools must also pay close attention to is the CURRICULUM for life. It goes beyond the classroom. It goes beyond grades.
What are the values and principles that will guide our children through life.
Now more than ever, this becomes more critical.
Parents, Schools, Churches, Mosques. etc must work together to write this curriculum.
We cannot afford to let them fail .
I can't stop wondering what happened.
What turned this young man from a good medium income family (in the 70s/80s ) with great academic promise to a Marwa Driver. Hmmmmm. Life

How to inspire manners to your children
1. When entering the house greet your children with salams and kisses. This should help develop their sense of love and mercy.
2. Be good to your neighbours and never backbite. Never speak ill of other drivers when on the road. Your children listen, absorb and emulate.
3. When calling your parents, encourage your children to speak to them. When visiting your parents take your children with you. The more they see you take care of your parents the more they will learn to take care of you.
4. When driving them say to school, don't always play albums or cds. Rather, tell them the stories yourself. This will have a greater impact - trust me!
5. Read to them a short story a day – it doesn't take much time, but very impactful in creating strong bonds and wonderful memories.
6. Comb your hair, clean your teeth and wear presentable cloths even if sitting at home and not going out for the day. They need to learn that being clean and tidy has nothing to do with going out!
7. Try not to blame or comment on every word or action they say or do. Learn to overlook and let go sometimes. This certainly builds their self-confidence.
8. Ask your children's permission before entering their rooms. Don't just knock and enter, but then wait for a verbal permission. They will learn to do the same when wanting to enter your room.
9. Apologize to your children if you made a mistake. Apologizing teaches them to be humble and polite.
10. Don't be sarcastic or make fun of their views or feelings, even if you "didn't mean it" and was "only joking". It really hurts.
11. Show respect to your children's privacy. Its important for their sense of value and self-esteem.
12. Don't expect that they will listen or understand the first time. Don't take it personally. But be patient and consistent.

A 1963 Harvard graduate said this:
*_"My one big mistake in life has been providing a trust fund for my five' children. I'm very comfortable paying for an education for as long as they want to study in a reputable university. However, providing additional funds so they could have a lifestyle beyond what they have achieved on their own was a mistake."_*
A leadership teacher, John Maxwell says and I quote:
*_"If you do everything for your children, what will they do for themselves?"_*
By the time they finish university education, we have slaved and built houses for them, put car keys in their hands and bankrolled their wedding.
*_What will they do for themselves?_*
In the course of doing these for them, some people develop hypertension and all sorts of illnesses. Some slump and die. Some even steal to achieve these for their children.
*I submit to you all that inheritance goes beyond material things. Give your children the right values, strong character and a revelatory knowledge of the power they carry as a creature of God!*
*_Then they will create water to sell in the dessert and sell sand to the Arabs to build mansions for themselves._*
Do something for your children to make them have a softer take off.
The keyword is *_"take off"._*
Do not *_take over_* their lives because you yourself have your life to live.
*Think about these things critically and adjust your approach religiously. Above all teach them the word of God!!!*

Hello Nairalanders, My brother just got an invite for interview at Christ College Ibafo, not the Ikeja day school. Pls do anybody here know the conditions of service in the school. As per if the environment is friendly or hostile.
He is not desperate for a job, as he presently works in a well paying school. But just in search of greener pastures. I told him I will seek advice here on his behalf before he commit himself.
Thanks

The Kaduna State Government is making good its promise to drop about 22,000 primary school teachers in the state and has begun the process of recruiting 25,000 fresh number of primary school teachers.

A notice to that effect has been issued by the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

The notice signed by the executive chairman of SUBEB, Nasiru Umar, said the recruitment was part of the state government’s effort to equip all schools with competent and qualified teachers in the bid to provide quality education and learning to pupils across the state.

The notice indicated that applicants were expected to have a certificate from the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria.

It stressed that the Kaduna State Executive Council had approved the outcome of the teachers’ competency test and had directed immediate action to recruit new teachers.

But teachers under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) have threatened to embark on an industrial action should the state government go ahead with its plan to sack 21,780 primary school teachers said to have failed the primary four examination conducted to test their competency.

Addressing newsmen at the end of its emergency State Executive Council meeting yesterday, the state chairman of the union, Comrade Audu Amba alleged that the competency test upon which the state government based its decision to sack the teachers and employ new ones was not professionally conducted.

“The only competent body that can test teachers’ competency is the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN),” Amba said.

He said the teachers were not tested based on professionalism or based on what they studied, and that teachers had resolved to go for a showdown should government go ahead with its plan.

He said relieving so many teachers of their job would set the state 20 years backward, and that although the NUT supported the government’s desire to improve on the quality of education in Nigeria, it did not support the modality employed by the state government in conducting the competency test.
