The Nigerian government has approved funding of almost $5m (£3.8m) to create a new national airline.

But does Nigeria need it? And can it afford it?

It's a waste of time. They should just improve on business environment. We have enough case studies of failure with state owned assets.

The most astonishing thing about Nigeria is the refusal of its leaders to learn from even their own country's past record of failure, let alone looking into what others elsewhere have done well or poorly.

If this story hits front page you'll see at half the comments supporting. The big reason will because Ethiopia and Kutar have one. The won't bring up Quantas. Honestly the learning curve is almost vertical.

What I don't get is why people who rush to use Ethiopia as an example don't bother asking why countries like the USA and the UK don't have "national airlines", or why the UK privatized British Airways in the 1980s in the first place. So many Nigerians are just incredibly lazy and incurious, even though the answers to so many questions are within easy reach thanks to the internet.
